Coffee post-op? Also, leg cramps.
My Doc never restricted it. had it from day 1 on my tray in the Hospital.

I have to take daily Magnesium Citrate supplements (500 mg a day) to avoid debilitating, tear-inducing leg cramps while sleeping, and have had to for more than 5 years now. If I miss more than a week, they come back.
FYI Magnesium Oxide is the most common form in stores, but the least bio-available. So other than giving you the poopy-poos (which is great if you need them), it's useless for supplementing magnesium as a nutrient. Citrate or other forms work better.

I am not a doctor, but I play one at work.
I am still pre-op VSG. So while I am currently drinking decaf coffee, my plan is to switch to plain ho****er in the morning until I am well into the solid foods. While tea is lower in acid, it is still harder to process on a new stomach than the water will be. The way I am looking at the whole surgery topic is that I am being issued a NEW stomach, so like an infant it will take a while for the stomach to be able to tolerate many foods.
As for leg cramps, I find that the balance of calcium, magnesium, Vitamin D and zinc are my critical supplements. However my Doc did put me on potassium supplements too. Not sure if potassium affects leg cramps but I haven't had one since taking all the supplements.

Hi Dh101,
That's a good way to look at this! Baby steps for a new stomach. I actually am fine with a coffee pause for a year or longer if necessary. Black tea can be high in tannins, but there are many herbal teas which should be gentle enougb, like chamomile, fennel, mint, etc. I'll try them when the time comes!
