I'm only 5 months out, but it's likely water weight. My doctor told me to be sure to get all my fluids in the first week to prevent dehydration and to do the best I can with protein shakes the first week. It gets easier, it just takes time (baby steps) and a lot of patience!

Hi Cather,
So...it's highly unlikely that you're losing muscle at this point. The body has lots of failsafes before it starts burning muscle for fuel (namely...fat!). Usually initial losses are mostly water and some fat. So I would venture to guess it's mostly water. If you are like most post-ops, you'll hit a stall in two weeks that makes you want to slap somebody. It's all perfectly normal.
If you can't keep liquids down, I think you should call your surgeon's office for help. It may be what's in your shake but also a small percentage of folks develop what's called a stricture, which is scar tissue somewhere along your digestive system where they operated, that can prevent you from keeping food down. So be sure to call if you are concerned. Are you keeping water and other liquids down?
Also you said you had a bypass/sleeve. I've not heard of folks having both procedures. Did you have both or just one?

I found warm liquids worked best in the early days. I was warming my premier protein so I could drink it. (By place it in a bowl of warm or ho****er so not to overheat and cause protein wierdness that can happen). Was like hot chocolate.
