Having a gastric bypass this summer and have some questions. Thank you !
I am one that considers dumping to be a benefit of my surgery. My first surgery included a sleeve and I continued to eat sugar throughout the entire time.
Knowing I dump keeps me away from sugar and being as addicted as I am to sugar I will take any help I can get.
It is very rare to dump on things other than sugar. I'm not saying it doesn't happen because I have seen many who do dump on other things. I am just saying that if only 30% of RNY patients dump then the number of those who dump on things other than sugar must be even lower. No evidence to back that up, just a logical conclusion.
I just know that if I didn't know I got very sick eating sugar than I would definitely be eating it. I did it before with my original surgery and I would do it again if I could without paying a very heavy and pretty immediate reaction.
I would equate it to using Antabuse. I know alcoholics who have quit drinking alcohol when taking it. They start up again when they are off the Antabuse. The difference is I cannot turn it on and off.
My sister dumped when she first had her RNY in 2002 but for some reason it was important for her to be able to eat sugar and she eventually was able to tolerate it after steadily increasing the amount of sugar she ate. She also regained nearly all of the weight she lost when she did that.
I agree that if I dumped after eating other things like protein or high fats like I have heard others do that I definitely would not consider that a benefit but for just old fashion sugar induced dumping I am glad I have that.
