What's on your Wednesday Menu, RNYers?

Hi Scott, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but FYI, a protein-laced carb is still just a carb :(

I "indulge" in some high protein granola in my maintenance phase but it truly an indulgence and one of the reasons I think I had some regain.

Your first year out is a gift! It's like a magic time when you can lose tons without having to fight for it... I definitely recommend maximizing that year, and cutting your carbs down well below 40/day. You'll reach goal faster if you can!

Hope that's not too pushy! I don't want to scare you off of the menu board. We are all here to help :)

You'll have to ratchet up the snark if you're gonna scare me off ?

Seriously my any feedback is good. I truly appreciate it. I do admit to a certain weakness when it comes to cereal but "soggy bran cereal" was on my list of approved list so I figured this was even better. It's probably got 20g of carbs.

The sad sad irony in all this (at least for me so far) is that it's so easy to get the bad foods down and next to impossible to ingest the lean protein I really need.

I had to revise from the band because it was nearly impossible to eat anything except for "slider foods" like crackers after it became bad, so I get it! But you are really really new, so stick to things like greek yogurt, cottage cheese and tuna, for soft foods that have high protein. Have you visited the website The World According to Eggface? She has awesome bariatric recipes, including ones for the soft food phase.

Thanks. I'll definitely check it out.

I really think the foods often cited in medical literature as part of the post-op diet are totally lacking in imagination. I get it that many are dealing with food addictions/ eating disorders and they need to break that food-as-pleasure cycle but I'd argue that people also need to learn that healthy food can be truly delicious.

Hi Scott,

I'm almost 8 months out and I still have issues tolerating chicken breast and other tough meats (chops, some steak, reheated fish). Its strange because i could tolerate it more at 2-3 months, but somewhere between 3-4 months, I just couldn't keep it down! Lately I've been eating a a lot of dark/marbled meats, seafood, eggs and egg bakes, ground meat (burger patties & meatballs included), Dairy (Cheese/yogurt) and cold cuts (though i've had issues tolerated once or twice) and jerky. I agree with JB, the Special K bar is still a carb so watch out for those. They also don't recommend protein bars because they're laced with carbs as well and can easily work like a glorified candy bar.

Welcome! I'm usually a regular but work's kept me away. Im trying to post more often, so if you've been around for long, I apologize. Nice to meet you!

Sincerely,
Mariecel

Thanks Mariecel,

The nutrition team at my surgical office really did a good job of educating us patients and I'm constantly looking at food labels. I haven't had a protein bar yet; we were talking about Special K protein infused cereal. i don't really care for the bars but I guess they're ok in a pinch. Cheers!

Good morning!

Today I started out with:

1/2 cup Bran Flakes and 1/2 cup 1% milk, with 1/2 cup milk left to drink if I choose;

Snacks: Oikos Triple Zero greek yogurt (I just found these in the market. 15g protein each!)

Lunch: 1/2 cup cottage cheese with sriracha mixed in so it doesn't taste like clumpy sour cream.

Supper: Chicken and steamed veggies

Evening snack: 1 oz cheese if I even bother.

For drinks, tons of water, maybe 1 decaf coffee, and 1 wild raspberry hibiscus tea. Not my favourite, but it's what I've got.

Rode the bike to work again. 3.5 miles each way, so it's not much but it's something. Daily, rain or shine I either ride or walk. That's my time, so the cellphone ringer goes off, the earbuds go in (if I'm walking, never cycling) and I just enjoy the commute. I'm only down about 60 since orientation last July, but it feels so much better when I hop on the bike. I can hardly wait til this body is another 60 down.

Cheers

Remember, no matter where you go.......there you are.

When I had to take the Carafate post-op I felt like I needed a physics degree to figure out what to take when. Good job staying on track. My scale decided to be a total B this morning and betray me. It motivated me to throw away the remaining cornbread I'd made on Sunday.

QOTD- I don't mind flying-- but I don't like long flights. Furthest I've gone is California and I didn't like the non-stop flight- I'd rather break up my time in the air with a stop.
