Feeling overwhelmed from my Dr's apt

I often share with people that losing too much weight may not be a great idea.

When we lose most of the fat we had - and keep losing - we start losing muscles. Not a good idea.

Even if you have normal BMI - your body fat% can be really low. Losing more weight can cause more bad than good things at that point.

Not having enough fat can cause low cholesterol - too low for some people. Very low cholesterol can cause low hormones, slow healing, depression, low immune response, etc.

Plus being below goal weight can give us false sense of security,: I can eat anything want...

Also- getting too skinny,- not enough body fat- can cause problems if you get sick - very low reserves. So if you need another surgery- like hernia repair - you would need the extra to be able to recover. I always lose weight when I have any surgery. A few lbs. There is the "liquid diet before and after" , the recovery time when I really don't feel like eating - post anesthesia + pain pills, and last but not least - my body used a lot of energy to heal.

If you think still have extra - too much,- fat your want to lose - find a place in your area that does a full body DEXA scans. And if that shows you are 25% body fat or above - then go for it - and get to 25 or even even below that.

She was worried about my fat percentage. And my intake of fats and the vitamins that need fat. So this makes sense to me more now. Thank you for this. It was what I needed to hear.

We get a lot of crappy nutrition advice from surgeons and nutritionists. If you want to lose 10 more, go for it. 10 pounds either way won't make a difference overall.

I'd also go ahwad and increase calories a little. Myself, I would add 100 calories per day for a week or 10 days, then up it again if need be. I'd also make those calories fats, not carbs.

This is where weighing and logging food super closely pays off. If you are guessing, it's easy to be way off. Picture being on a highway completely by yourself, with a broken speedometer. You might think you are below the speed limit, but you could be over by 50 percent. And get a big fat ticket.

That's what I would do.

Thank you, Grim. I really think I'm going for the last 10 pounds and then I will take the advice and slowly add more calories ( fats not carbs) till I find my maintenance daily amount. I do track everything now so I will continue to do that. I really appreciate the advice! Thank you!

1) lose as much as you can if you want to weigh less do it. this is not time to squander. this is the time where you do not need to listen to people that detract you from your goal. If I listened to my doctor I would weigh 170 pounds because they were 'happy' with my progress.

I had emergency hernia surgery 8 months prior to my WLS. It was an umbilical hernia that developed from my first laparoscopic gall bladder surgery in 1991, and I had it for over 10 years. My lower intestine started getting strangulated periodically, causing me bowel obstructions. After one ER trip and hospital visit in 2015, the second ER visit in Feb 2016 resulted in emergency surgery.

My symptoms were extreme gas, abdominal swelling, and intense pain. The first episode, I tried every gas/nausea/stomach medication known to man, including enemas, to try and solve the problem to no avail. After 30+ hours of 10 level pain, I finally had my sister take me to the ER. The surgeon was able to push the strangulated intestine back into place, so I avoided surgery that time.

When the same thing happened a year later, I tried repositioning it myself (I had done so successfully several times over that year as the surgeon showed me how). I suffered the same gas, swelling and pain, and tried to avoid the hospital but couldn't do it, so drove myself to the ER, and this time they couldn't fix it and I had to have surgery.

I recommend strongly having the CT (no big deal at all) and finding out if you have one and getting it repaired. The pain I endured was awful, and I have a very high pain tolerance. Avoid getting to that point if you can!
