Lung expansion pains

Remember when we were in the hospital after surgery and they gave us the little tool that made is breathe and expand our lungs? Remember how it hurt to do it?

I am 3 weeks post surgery today. I still get those types of pain if I sneeze or yawn, but it is mild. However...when I have been sleeping and I need to get up, the pain is pretty intense as I sit and stand...and again it hurts when I lie down again. It is not related to eating (not gas), it seems to be a breathing-lung expansion issue, but only when getting out of bed for the most part, altho as I sit here typing this and I breathe deep, it does hurt...just not as intensely as during the night. It seems to get worse as time goes on, as in the intensity of the pain is more now than it was a week ago.

Your thoughts?

Please give your surgeon a call and explain what is going on. If pain is getting worse and not better the surgeon needs to know. Best of luck.

Not trying to scare you...ok..maybe I am...please get off the computer and call your doctor, or call ER and talk to a triage nurse...NOW...could be nothing...could be pulled muscle...could be pneumonia...could be pulmonary embolism, that could break off, and kill you, before you can type another question...

Please follow up, and let us know what you find out

I had a lot of rib cage type pain as well and I'm barely a month out from my surgery.

Part of of it is just I think spending a lot of time in bed. Part of it is you just had a pretty serious surgery and you're still healing.

I used a heating pad and a nightly Tylenol.

This is how I felt immediately after my sleeve surgery. I could not take a deep breath and could barely move that little ball thingy. I knew something was wrong. I remember drinking a nasty drink and having an xray and they found the kink/obstruction in my sleeve. I'd call your surgeon to be safe.

where is the pain exactly? Like the front of your chest, down deep in the sides of your lungs, under the diaphragm? Is it on both sides, or one? Does it only hurt when you take a deep breath? Sorry, I'm a nurse, haha! Anything that is getting worse is a concern, IMO...worth checking out.

Thanks for the replies...I called the surgeon, he's out the rest of the week but his assistant said she'll speak with him about it and get back to me. I am headed for my first post surgery appointment with my nurse and dietitian at 8am tomorrow,so will discuss it with them too. The pain is in the middle, during the day it is only when I take a deep breath, but at night it is worse, and happens as soon as I sit up or lie down again. The intense pain lasts about 30 secs - 1 min, then seems to calm. Pneumonia seems to be a concern, but I have no cough or anything else...I have had pneumonia and this is nothing like it.
