dumping
I am only 3 weeks post op so not eating much yet...I am curious tho, you all say that sugar sometimes causes dumping. How much sugar? Should I be terrified to have an occasional bite of a chocolate bar? Down the road when I am at a birthday party can I have a small piece of cake? Just wondering your experiences with what (and how much of it) caused dumping?
Hello!
congrats on your surgery and welcome to the bench!! I had RNY in 2011, lost 170 lbs, literally 1/2 of me. No one will know if they will dump unless they "dump". My best advise is dont be to terrified BUT, why put yourself in. Position of dumping in the first place. There is a reason we all have had weight loss surgery in the first place, it's because we have issues with food. No amount of surgery or divine intervention is going to help wito help yourself. By this I don't mean you particularly I mean ppl in general. Keep sugar at bay, it's not your friend. Follow the rules set forth by your WLS team, put one foot in front of the other and you'll be a success. I have faith. All the best on your weight loss journey
hugs
In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.

I do dump. I dump if I drink a protein shake too fast. I have had one bite of my husband's dessert. No issue, won't eat more...because I don't want to risk dumping. I had one Hershey's mini robins egg today from my kids haul with no issue, won't eat more than that though. It is also a rare thing for me to even do that. Not a crazy sweets craver, never have been. Though this week I have been for some reason..

I don't know if I dump and I honestly don't intend to find out anytime soon. Use this time to get to goal not think about bites of chocolate or small pieces of cake. ise this time to focus and stay on plan and you won't regret it.

Ok, so I am a random dumper.... Sounds silly, but its the truth. Twice now I've eaten and it's caused me to dump. Once early on after my surgery I had butternut squash soup....yeah, heads up, Panera puts honey in it...yikes! Then, a couple months later I had dumping when I had peanut butter...HONEY nut peanut butter.
I'm going to be real with you, I eat a bit of chocolate probably every day. No dumping. If I have to much, I've noticed my stomach just feels weird and I fall asleep pretty quickly. I haven't had cake yet, but just 20 minutes ago I had a bite of a Twix bar. I know there are far, far better choices, but I'm also being real here. I don't honestly eat a whole bunch of anything sugary...but yes, a bite or two has been fine for me. When I had my dumping episodes, I had consumed a good amount of the soup and the peanut butter. Not just a bite or two.

I appreciate your honesty and being real. So I will be real too. If you are eating chocolate every day at four months out, I worry about you and your ability to sustain a healthy future. Again, just being real, and caring about you.

I am not a doctor, but I play one at work.
You really want to stay under 10grams of sugar per serving.
For reference, a can of Coke had about 40 grams of sugar.
thanks for the replies...don't get me wrong, its not like I'm sitting here obsessing about when it is safe to eat chocolate - at 3 weeks post op, food really is the last thing on my mind and I am having to force myself to get the protein in...BUT to be real, life happens, and occasionally my husband may have a serving of a seriously decadent dessert and I may want to have bite. These are the situations I am referring to...
Thanks for the input - seems as if everyone is different and I will just have to see what happens.
I don't dump...but I didn't figure that out til after the first year. Do yourself a favour and stay away from it as long as possible. The mere fear of having the horrible pain and throwing up I heard sooo much about, kept me on the straight and narrow. Once I realized I could eat it, its much harder to resist. Don't test the waters!!!! Yes.....down the road your eating will change a bit from what it is now.....but the hope is you've had a great first year and maximized your loss time...and picked up great healthy habits. Take care !!
