antidepressant sr
Hi all,
Had vsg in Oct 2011 that had to be converted to rny Oct 2015 due to GERD.
I have been on Wellbutrin SR for a number of years. I have had some life issues that have thrown me into a major depression. My Psychiatrist says sr or xls do NOT work due to absorption issues so I have probably not been getting any benefit. Has anyone else experienced this? I have tried other antidepressants with various bad side effects which is why I am on Wellbutrin 150 sr 2x. He is trying 2 100 immediate release which is less than what I was on because he does not want to overdue if I have not been getting any from the sr. If you could add some thoughts on this I would greatly appreciate it. Feeling desperate.
I take Wellbutrin SR and I haven't noticed an issue. If I'm not absorbing it well then my depression is better. My Psych Didn't think it would be an issue but it would seem like it should be. I see my surgeon next week and plan on asking about that. I hope you find some relief.

Found this out when a psychiatrist came to the hospital where my daughter works and they were advised bariatric patients should not be prescribed Sr or xl due to absorption issues and that a lot of bariatric surgeons are either unaware or not addressing the issue. Also if 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut what happens when our gut is the size of an egg? Asked my surgeon and he said no studies have been done on that issue. Just an issue with those of us who experience serotonin related depression.

Your stomach is still in your body, it hasn't been removed (as in the VSG).

VSG 2013, RNY conversion 2019 due to GERD. Trendweight here!
Interesting topic; the absorption (or lack thereof) of psych meds. I have been stable on a ****tail of lamotrigine, seroquel xr and klonopin for a few years now. Minimal breakthrough mania and depression. Depression broke through big time at the end of January, and I have been struggling. Finally got my new pdoc to prescribe Paxil as an adjunct to the above ****tail, and we will see. But as it's said here in the the thread, if seratonin is produced mainly in the stomach and we now have an egg sized stomach, what is the recourse?
