I I'm trying to decide if I should have RNY or VSG surgery and I was just wondering what made you decide one over the other? Any advice?

I had GERD. RNY often (but not always) cures it. VSG often (but not always) makes it worse. That made it a no-brainer for me. No way I wanted to risk it getting any worse.

I went over it with my doctor and discussed both options.

I was a candidate for either one. I chose RNY because of my familiarity with it, knowing other RNY patients that have done well over many years, and for some reason, knowing my stomach is still in there made me feel better. Lol

Either one works well, but only if you change your ways as well. Oh, and neither one fixes the brain, and your issues there.

Being at 50+ BMI I knew I needed a procedure with 'dual action' (restriction and malabsorption). I initially wanted DS- but the doctor didn't think that was necessary.

Hi I had bad acid reflux so my Surgeon suggest I consider the RNY' over the sleeve. I'm so glad I did.... My friend did the sleeve and has not lost anything close to what I have. I am at 60 lbs in 6 months she is at 34 lbs at 9 months. I had open surgery because of prior issue, but I had a great surgeon and everything went great. So glad I did this..

  1. Thanks Karen, that's a big reason why I'm considering bypass over sleeve. My reflux isn't too frequent, but when it comes on it's BAD. Plus my Dr. wants me to get as much weight off of me as possible as quickly as possible because of my diabetes, so I'm thinking bypass is the way to go.

I had GERD (fairly well controlled with omeprazole pre-op). It turned out that I had a hiatal hernia. I had a VSG and the hernia was fixed at that time. I've lost 100% of my excess weight (stats in signature) and have no reflux now. At the end of the day you have to decide what you are more comfortable with.

I have not had surgery yet. At first I had wanted to go with the sleeve and did all sorts of research on it and was comfortable with the procedure. After my endoscopy my doctor told me that my severe GERD would get worse with the sleeve and he suggested I switch to the RNY. That sounded like a pretty invasive procedure to me and at first I though about just dropping everything. After speaking at length with the PA I changed my mind. He told me that if they performed surgery and I did not know which one I would not be able to tell the difference because the diets, etc. were pretty much the same. The only difference was that I would lose weight sooner (and it was more expensive). I joined this forum and after a week or so of reading the posts I decided for sure to go with the RNY. I have completed all of the requirements and am waiting for them to call me with a surgery date. How is your reflux now? Do you take any of the proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec? I have been on them for 12 or so years and my surgeon says they are not supposed to be taken for that long and could cause bad side effects as well as stop working.
