After WLS, what type of doctor do I need?

My WLS was done using an insurance plan that I no longer have and my current plan doesn't provide WLS. I need to find a doctor that understands the various needs (the correct labs etc.) as I'm having some issues. Do I look for a gastroenterology doctor or some other type? I can't use an actual bariatric doc. Thanks for any ideas.

Your PCP should be able to manage your care-- but not all PCP's are educated in post bariatric care. You may need recommendations.

my bariatric surgeon is general surgeon with a bariatric specialty... he does perform hernia repairs etc so I think I could see him regardless. When I'm referred I'm referred to the general surgical practice but scheduled specifically with him.

I'd imagine you'd only need a gastro doc if any problems develop

Just an FYI... when your PCP (or whomever) requests labwork watch what he codes it... if your policy doesn't cover WLS it's possible "Bariatric Lab Panel" might not be covered... maybe explain the situation first you don't want a zinger of a bill... those Iron, Ferritin tests etc. are pricey.

My endocrinologist is awesome at ordering any tests/blood work that I've ever asked for. My PCP is awesome too. I think as long as you have someone you've been with and trust, you should be fine.

My PCP requests a referral every year for me to have an annual visit to the Center for Weight Management for lab work. I think it's worth the hassle.

And your insurance plan will allow/cover that request? Thank you for replying!

You need first and foremost a BARIATRIC SURGEON, then a PCP (Primary Care Provider) and possibly a Gastric or Gastroenterology Doctor depending on your needs. Good Luck.
