Antibiotics?

I'm mildly curious how many of us were sent home on an antibiotic regimen post-surgery.

I was given antibiotics IV at the hospital on Wednesday before my band-removal, but that was it. When my husband inquired as to why the nurse said that most hospitals do it that way now....because overuse of antibiotics has become a big problem (and I agree that people do tend to overuse them for things like viral rhinitis, etc.) but I admit I was pretty surprised that they didn't send me home on them.

As it were, one of my incisions looks like it's become infected and I've got a nifty fever to go with it. We already talked to the bariatric fellow on call, sent him pictures of the incision in question and he's called in a script for some Bactrim.

Unless there is a complication, I can't say I've ever heard of people getting sent home on antibiotics.

I was definitely given some when I had my band placed but it was done in Mexico and protocol there is quite possibly different.

I honestly can't remember if I was sent home with anything after my caesarian, those days were a bit of a blur

The only time I got script for antibiotics after a surgery was a face lift. My doc does not want to take a chance any a incision get infected. Any other time (had too many to really list them) the only antibiotics if any were the ones in IV.

This is going to sound silly....but when I made this post last night I was exhausted and feverish....and I think I was thinking of my pets who always get sent home with antibiotics after a procedure.

Which, of course, makes total sense because they're rolling around in litter boxes and whatever.

I think when I had my band removed, I was given abx. in the hospital only. The reasoning was to make a "pre-emptive strike" because the port removal can be a source of infection, especially if there has been erosion.

Which site looks wonky??

Funny enough it's not the port incision! I think that surprised the doctor that we spoke with last night too...he expected that. In fact my surgeon told me that she used staples because there was a possibility of drainage. They had a lot of trouble getting that port out, bleh.

The one giving me the most trouble is actually one of the Trocar incisions.

Figures my band would be a pain in the arse on it's way out too, oy!

Isn't sooo irritating that something we thought would improve our lives became such an aggravation!!

Yeah....hindsight being what it is I should have chosen the RNY from the get-go, but I was young and scared and didn't have a good understanding of what my underlying issues with food were yet.

Now I'm older, wiser, (and crankier) about it

Bands are like boats. The two happiest days are when you get one, and get rid of one.
