Question
So I just got done walking again. When we got back to the room the nurse said that I had been switched over to stage 2 and that I would be getting cream of wheat or oatmeal for breakfast..this seems way too fast from what I have read. I just had surgery yesterday around noon.

Hello--glad you are doing well after surgery! My program sent me home on Stage 2, as well, but it was yogurt and ricotta cheese, not carby stuff like they are offering you! If you are not comfortable with it, you can ask for a protein shake or yogurt, instead!
The nurse was not correct when she said oatmeal / cream of wheat. I actually got my tray about 30 min ago and I have cream of chicken soup...no chunks, grape juice that I won't drink and a cup of milk
Thanks for the replies...I thought what she said sounded off.

I was given cream of wheat in the hospital day after surgery. I tried to eat it with some of the protein powder they had. OMG yuck. I would stick to protein drinks, yogurt and lots of water. But I also moved to pureed with a day or two.

Some programs have you on liquids until you heal to avoid problems. Other doctors feel that pushing food will help keep things open and not allow strictures to form. My program advanced us quickly. I've heard that people tolerate food better if they start eating sooner.
Some doctors allow carbs or any smooth food in the beginning because you eat so little, then they encourage protein first. I think it is better to not eat carbs, it is easier to stay off carbs if you don't introduce them after surgery.
Glad you are doing well. Anyways, you are an "old pro" at the correct way to eat.

Every program seems to advance at a different rate. Some doctors have very poor food choices listed on the post-op plan. Cream of wheat and oatmeal are things recommended for non ops needing a bland diet, but bad choices for us.
I was on liquids for three weeks, but it seems most doctors are advancing patients faster than that, and then soft foods such as cottage cheese, greek yogurt, and very tender meat after that.
