Week 2 post op: What are your favorite purée foods?
on 3/12/17 3:03 pm
Puréed low fat turkey chili no beans (from a can!) absolutely saved me. Sometimes it's all I could eat. The ricotta bake was great also.

Thanks for posting so I could also benefit from folks responses. How are you feeling so far? My surgeon doesn't have me start puréed foods until 2 weeks post op, which is fine by me because I'm still struggling to get my liquids in. I am excited to see how it goes for you so I can share in your successes.
The first couple of days were hard - mostly from the gas pains post surgery more than anything else. I made myself walk every day to help with that! As for the liquids, also challenging as I knew it would be. I made a promise to myself that I would NOT let myself get dehydrated (I'm terrified of that for some reason) so I have liquids in my hand every moment I am awake. Sometimes I'd even set my alarm a couple of times over night to get up for an hour or so and sip water and take my meds to stay ahead of my pain. I did 48 oz minimum every 24 hours this first week and now it's time to get 64 this week.
my advice is scale down the recipes! You're eating like 1/4 cup servings, so a pot of soup goes a looooong way if you're the only one eating it.
Also, follow your plan regarding portion sizes, you won't feel restriction most likely, but it doesn't mean you should eat more.
I feel like I'm the only person in the world who doesn't care for ricotta bake...
i had purée cauliflower and cheddar soup, Black bean soup, lentil soup. Yogurt.
my plan included moist scrambled eggs at this stage too. Which I still find too filling sometimes to be worth it. But at the time, 1/2 a scrambled egg with hot sauce tasted absolutely decadent haha.
good luck!

I really like it, but I made it with 0% ricotta. If I had to do it over again - I'd probably would have mixed in some 4% cottage cheese (as that is what my wife eats, so its always in the house). I also used my favorite low cal sauce (from Hole in the Wall - a local restaurant). It's really great and its only 35 cals for 1/2 cup. Almost no sugar and really flavorful. Better than those 50 to 75 cal versions at the grocery store - and they sell it at one of the local specialty shops too.
You are not the only person in the world who did not care for the ricotta bake. I got a recipe from Achelle1 for a ricotta bake that is a sweetened version, and one that uses sausage and dried tomatoes, and it is much better for me. The marinara and mozzarella did not work well for me.

Refried beans were my lifesaver, with melted cheese and hot sauce. Also pureed turkey chili from Trader Joe's, Dannon greek yogurt, and cottage cheese. I never actually pureer the cottage cheese, just chewed really well.
Second not to buy too much of anything. Some things that I made were a never-again type of food. I also made ahead soups and pureed them and then absolutely hated them after surgery. Ended up throwing out a lot of cubes two weeks ago finally.

I mostly ate pureed broth-based bean soups. Navy bean & ham, Split Pea, Lentil, White Chicken Chili, Black Bean & Salsa, etc. Wasn't allowed cream-based soups or I would have been all over that. Oh, and tomato soup made with water. We were allowed chicken noodle but it spiked my blood sugar the one time I tried it so that was out.
Enjoy the puree stage!

Band removal & RNY Feb 1 2017
Pureed yams with a bit of cinnamon, yogurt, cream of celery soup mixed with low sodium chicken broth, & tuna salad. I was craving my tuna salad so much I made it up then threw it in the blender til it had the consistency of pudding. Tasted so good, but that's me.
Congrats!
It gets better everyday.
Congrats on having your surgery!
I'm starting purees again today after a failed first attempt over 2 weeks ago. My tummy wasn't ready and I had to have 2 extra weeks of full liquids (bleah!).
One of my favorite things that I tried last time was pureed egg salad, made with one soft boiled egg. 1 tbsp low cal miracle whip, and 2 or 3 tbsp Greek yogurt, along with some salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. Yum!
I also liked refried beans. The ricotta bake was yummy but it hurt after eating because I still had inflammation (thus the return to liquids). I'm soooo glad to be able to return to purees today. I'm having refried beans for a late lunch.
