Would this cause dumping?

I'm only 6 weeks out, and my theory is- if I think it might cause dumping I'm not touching it. I'm also not eating bread, rice, sugar or flour.

I can eat exactly 1/4 cup of halo top ice cream.  Or two pieces of SF candy.  If I eat a drop more - bam!  So as others have said, the sugar alcohols can be a problem.  I rely on just a few things if I need a sweet - typically at a party or just whenever.  I don't eat a lot of any of it, so don't get me wrong.

Halo top mint is pretty good - but I don't like the other flavors

Healthwise biscotti - those are great, but not so great that 2 is actually enough (and its 15 cals each with 3 carbs)

SmartCake - they are 38 calories each and have 4 grams of protein (but have sugar alcohols, so be careful).

Other than that, maybe SF jello with SF coolwhip

That's its.  I don't go beyond that and only select one of those about once a week.

It makes me feel pretty normal and I believe helps teach me that I can make better sweet choices.  It also sets boundaries as I have an option to plan with at parties, etc.  That way I never even think about eating the candy, cakes cookies.  Remember, I've said that my wife bakes - so the house is FULL of stuff at any time.  And the storage unit for all that is in my gym.  What an oxymoron that is.  However, in case you worry.  Those have been there for years and even at 500 pounds, I never invaded the freezer.  It's a boundary I don't cross ever.  As I know the consequences.

I was desperate for something sweet last week so I had 1/2 of a Premier Mint Protein bar.  I'm not going to lie, it tasted wonderful.  Although about 30 minutes later I thought I was going to die from all the GI discomfort.  It took several hours for the pain to go away, I went from thinking I was going to die to wishing I were dead throughout the night.  Sugar alcohols for me are the devil!

In prepping for my life after surgery I've been pinning different recipe ideas on Pinterest. But I have a question about desserts. I'm the type of person that just loves sweets. If I was to make a  sugar free dessert do you think that would still cause dumping? Like for example there was a sugar free cake mix in one of the recipes. Or like there was a recipe for sugar free fudge that had sugar free condensed milk and sugar free chocolate chips. Are these acceptable to eat life after surgery?  Or will if cause problems?

they may not cause dumping, but they sure will cause weight gain, because , calories.

I agree with the sugar alcohols being the problem that other posters have mentioned, but this is more important!  Sugar free does not mean calorie free.  If you compare the sugar free cake mix stats with a regular cake mix there is not much difference in the calorie count.

Regular cake mix stats     Sugar free cake mix stats

Notice the carb count.  There are still 29 carbs in a serving of sugar free cake and 33 carbs in regular cake.  There is 120 calories in sugar free cake and  160 calories in regular cake.

Best to learn to live without  eating sweet stuff daily if you want to succeed with WLS.

That stuff may seem important right now but after surgery your whole mindset will change. You will be dealing with trying to figure what normal daily food will agree with you rather than worrying about some fancy dessert. Don't waste time on all that junk right now

I am 5+ months post-op and I do have days where I crave something sweet, especially if people around me are having something.  I have learned to just avoid the break room when it has donuts, but at home I will either make up ice cream using my Premier Protein drinks, or sugar free chocolate pudding with Fairlife (high protein) milk.  I have also used greek plain yogurt in place of milk for sf pudding.  And sf jello with sf cool whip works sometimes.  I have a protein hot chocolate, has a lot of calories but once every couple of weeks it seems to fill the need. Greek yogurt, either Triple Zero Oikos or Dannon Light are good sometimes.  Syntrax makes a fuzzy navel that I can mix with water and it is like having juice, but gives a protein hit instead. I never use the sf cake mixes, nor do I ever buy the sf cookies/cake/anything.  Slippery slope.

I do notice that things are getting slowly better.  My habits and routine are changing, and I am getting very used to looking for protein sources rather than other food items.
