Vitamin Patches

So funny to hear other doctors take on this matter. I asked my surgeon at my preop appointment of the 14th of Vitamin patches after surgery would be a good idea... He chuckled a little, and said there's not much research and evidence behind them. He then went onto say that he doesn't understand how a tiny patch can way so little but have so many vitamins in it.

Idk how it effects anybody, but I trust my surgeon and will be staying away from them for a little while.

I was skeptical about patches too, because of the lack of research. I watched a bunch of vets use them for a year and a half, and they all had great results, so I took the plunge.

I've been using them for 14 months, and labs are great. I'm absorbing far more calcium from the patches than I was from oral calcium citrate, and I had been taking 2,500 mg per day. I know a couple of people who brought their ferritin way up with iron patches, where no amount of oral iron was making it budge.

If you have no problem taking your supplements orally, and your labs are good, there's no need to change. But if you are constantly forgetting vits, it could be a good option.

The first couple of years, taking supplements 5 or 6 times a day, two hours apart -- day in and day out -- isn't too bad. But it starts to get wearisome after that. I think you'll find the patches a godsend when that happens.

I recently switched to the patch from oral supplements with my surgeon's blessing.  We're going to run a full set of labs in two months to see where I am, and if I'm holding steady or my numbers increase, I'll be given the permanent green light.  The only thing I take orally is my B-12, and that was more of a function of cost.  The pills are so inexpensive, and it takes nothing for me to pop one under my tongue.  I couldn't justify the monthly cost, even with the 40% discount.
