Thank you, I appreciate it.

I had type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and triglycerides and RNY had the best chance of helping with those things. I also have a slow metabolism and felt I needed the initial period of malabsorption to get me to my Goal. I also had a hiatal hernia and GERD so my surgeon suggested RNY. Diabetes, high cholesterol and triglycerides are all no longer an issue and I went from a high weight of 272 to 117 where I've been now for over 31/2 years. If you click on my name you'll find before and after pics.

Saw two family members with sleeve/lap band that weren't successful. I decided to walk down the better known road of RNY.

For me, it was between the DS and the RNY.  I was an insulin dependent diabetic -- I wanted surgery to be as healthy as possible as I wanted to be around to see my son grow up.  That was my biggest motivator -- and the DS and RNY had the greatest chance to put my diabetes into remission.

The DS is a wonderful surgery, but I wasn't comfortable with it.

Started at 347 with a BMI of 58 and an A1c that was at it's highest 9.1 and at its best in the 6.5 range (on insulin and metformin) -- to being 127 to 137 with a BMI of 21 and an A1c that runs between 4.2 and 4.7 without medication.  It has been a lot of work, and there's a lifetime commitment to watching your vitamin/blood levels and supplementing -- but it has been 100% worth all that effort.

Thanks so much for your advice Kat.  I am also an insulin dependent diabetic with a young son who is my world.  I want to be able to do everything with him and for him and give him the life he deserves.  My a1c has been over 10 in previous years so I am really hoping to reverse my diabetes.  Congrats on your success story, I can only hope mine is half as good as yours!  :)

From my understanding it's the most successful out of all of them. So I wanted to set myself up for success.

I have (had) Type II Diabetes and my surgeon did not give me a choice.  RNY is the gold standard for curing diabetes.  My a1c was 11 at one point.  I was insulin dependent and on metformin... my last a1c was 6.4 without insulin and a half dose of metformin.  Looking forward to my next a1c in two weeks, which I hope will be back in the pre-diabetic range.

I had already decided on the sleeve before discussing these things with my surgeon. When he walked in the room he asked me if I had any idea of which surgery I wanted, but I asked him to give me his opinion first. I found out about dumping during that conversation. He said that a sleeve patient could eat a bowl of ice cream instead of dinner if they chose, with little to no side effects, and that RNY added an extra 'benefit' of potential dumping. When I heard that, I knew I would eat that bowl of ice cream some day, because I'm a sugar addict. He explained all of the pro's and con's of each type of surgery and we decided together that RNY was right for me.

My two main deciding factors were GERD and Type 2 diabetes. Every adult member of my family on my mom's side has developed diabetes as an adult and I got it early. (mid 30s) My GERD was so bad I couldn't have imagined it getting any worse. That was end of discussion for me. RNY was the way to go.  I also really liked the many years of data behind RNY, and it's proven track record. I couldn't be happier with my choice.

(And PS, I do dump from sugar, yay!)
