How come you chose RNY?
Good morning all and Happy Valentine's Day!
I was just wondering what made everyone choose this type of surgery over the sleeve or the other options? At every nutrition class, education class an pre-op surgery class that I have gone to, everyone else there was getting the sleeve and I was the only one opting for RNY. I chose this one because I am diabetic and thought that it would be the best chance of me hopefully reversing my diabetes and losing the most weight. What helped you make your choice? Or did your doctor decide for you? Thanks in advance!

I had GERD, and I didn't want to risk it getting any worse. The sleeve often (but not always) makes it worse - RNY often (but not always) cures it.
The other thing I found appealing about it is that it's a much older surgery (although techniques have changed and improved over the years), so there's a lot more long-term research data behind it.
thanks. When I started this journey, my hope was to get to 199 lbs. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine I'd be below 150 - yet, here I am. I give a lot of credit to OH for my success. I come here every day and post here almost every day. I also joined one of the menu boards about six months ago (where people post their menus for the day). OH in general, and particularly the menu board, have kept me really focused on my weight loss - plus it's great for accountability. So keep coming back to OH!!! There are lots of successful people here - it's been very inspiring!!

GERD, which my surgeon's PA just told me to stop the PPI. I haven't been uncovered in therapy for my GERD in 15 years. This scares me. But I was told I literally couldn't have the sleeve without having major GERD complications (Barrett's, etc.)
Diabetes - which has reversed and is now in pre-diabetes stages
Significantly greater success rate for people my BMI (at the initial consult)
Statistically greater percentage of weight loss overall and maintained
These were the reasons my surgeon told me to do the RNY, but he left it up to me. But he was seriously compelling me to do RNY. But I think the greatest influence was the psych who told me that in his experience I will be successful with RNY or I may be successful with a VSG. He really recommended me to do the RNY. That was the straw that pushed me in the RNY direction.
I had a lap band placed in 2009 and removed in October 2015 due to slippage and other complications, including severe GERD and esophageal hernia. My surgeon said I could have either operation (VSG or RNY) as a revision but he recommended RNY. That's why I chose RNY. Best decision ever. No more GERD (!!!), weight loss on track (70+ lbs), no complications.
The sleeve was newer, with less of a track record. And too many were developing acid problems down the line, and needed revision to RNY. I wanted one surgery and be done.
RNY has better diabetes control, and better weight loss.
