Unhappy pouch day
on 2/13/17 3:42 am
I consider myself an "expert" on stuck food and vomiting because I had the lapband for 6 years...so let me pop in with some quick advice about what to do if it happens!
First, while every one of your instincts will tell you to drink to clear the stuck feeling, it always makes it worse! Here is why: Think of your esophagus as a kitchen sink drain. If you have something stuck in your sink, you know that adding water won't make it flow--instead the water just sits on top of whatever is stuck there. Same thing with your pouch. It may take a few very uncomfortable hours, but it will eventually pass on its own, with time and gravity.
Second, if you do throw up, take the next 24 hours on just fluids to let the pouch rest and heal. It gets very irritated and you will be more likely to have it happen again, if you don't let it heal and rest before trying solid food again.
Last, (and this is gross, sorry), look at what you vomit. 99% of the time you will find that one chunk that was too big and caused the irritation. You think you chewed everything perfectly, but there is almost always a reason that it happened, when you are this early out.
Feel better!
I'm nearly 2 year out and this happened with me not to long ago with jello. Jello- the so called slider food got stuck for me. Sometimes it just happens regardless of the type of food.
It usually takes a day for my stomach to feel better.

I have to chew a meatball twice as much as any other meat. I learned that the hard way too. I have also had problems with jello. I have more a difficult time with jello now than I did after surgery 4 1/4 months ago. It's a lot of trial and error even with all of our guidelines. I hope it gets better for you soon.
Get better quick!

Same thing happened to me today. But it was baked chicken. Maybe I ate too fast or didn't chew enough. After I hurled in the toilet I felt nearly better. This was my first time hurling in the toilet. I can't think of a happier way to describe this. Plus the fact, it's my birthday! Not fun.

It seems you are not very far out. I didn't even begin to attempt to eat that sort of food until a month or two later. I started with very soft fish first (scallops, fish fillets). I ate deli meats and cheese early out as that seemed to digest well. Chicken and meats came much later. I did eat beef jerky at about 4-5 weeks and chewed it to pieces before swallowing. That helped me get protein in and I could eat a little bit at a time throughout the day. Good luck at finding what works. Don't rush the process.

I am 18 months out. Last night I had canned tuna. About 20 minutes later I was in severe discomfort. It was like the gas pains in the hospital. I burped up some of the tuna. I used to be able to throw up when this happened earlier in the process. Now I have to endure the discomfort. I have not eaten tuna since the surgery. Don't know why, just had not had any. I don't know if it was the tuna or eating too fast. Tuna goes down without a bunch of chewing, so maybe I ate too much. It is always a learning process. It changes, one day I can eat chicken, next week I am miserable. I have been safe with yogurt and eggs. I am in maintenance and can eat most everything, but you never know.

You are very early out and the transition to solids takes time. Eat slow, chew well, small pieces and make sure it is moist. Even with that some things just may not agree with you for awhile. I couldn't eat tuna for 6 months without gagging on it.
