Two Days Post Op!!
I had my surgery on 1/31 and was able to come home last night. I did the RNY at Fair Oaks with Dr. Moazzez. Really pleased with him and all the nursing staff. Very caring and knowledgeable. I don't remember anything after they gave me whatever it was to relax me before taking me to the OR until I woke up in my room upstairs. There was (is) pain in m abdomen, under my ribs and my shoulders. Strong but not bad unless I was trying to sit up. Pretty much slept all day yesterday and a good part of today. I've been walkng and sipping. Really hoping that thing about your tastes changing kicks in soon because these protein shakes are nasty!!! Yuck! Can't stand the aspartemate or stevia after tastes.
So, I'm set up on a recliner in my living room. This old thing gets passed around to whichever family member needs it. My daughter pulled in a little table for me to put my water, breathing exercise tube and stuff on. It was very sweet. She kept asking me to be sure I could reach everything. Trying to reach or stretch or anything that involves my torso hurts so I really appreciate it!!
Now comes the tough part!! People kept asking me if I was scared about the surgery. Nope- had good doctor and staff. I'm scared of what comes afterwards. I've been a compulsive and emotional eater my whole life. No idea how this will affect my depression either. Had to change my medication so that combined with the loss of food -yikes! Super scary!
Thanks again for everyone that contributes to this forum. I've learned a lot and will be needing it a lot in the upcoming months!!

Congrats on your surgery! Glad you are home resting. How sweet of your daughter to put the table beside the recliner and have all your meds and things, that is so nice.
My taste buds didn't change back to "normal" for quite some time, like a year or more, sorry not what you want to hear! I had a hard time with the shakes too, especially premier protein, hated them, had to do a lot of try this and try that to find what I could tolerate.
I am not going to sugar coat it for you, this post RNY lifestyle is HARD. As much as it takes to learn how to eat and not drink with your meals and take all your vitamins there is just as much going on in our heads and hearts. Its a very emotional journey. It seems that you already are working with a doctor for your depression/meds so that is great, make sure you keep that up.
WLS and all the hard work that goes with it,it is the best thing ever, I had my RNY in November 2013 and it was the best thing I ever did and I wish I had of done it years ago.
Best of luck, don't forget to walk, sip and toot as much as can to get that gas moving!

10+ years post op, living & loving life!
I was scared to death when I came home. After 2yrs of reading and waiting, I still felt I had no idea what to do. Take it day by day. Follow your plan. Move as much as possible. Drinks lots. Rest when you feel tired. And most of all BREATHE !!!!!! Really try to treat yourself well. Meditation type activities and breathing exercises amd a good support group can really help with anxieties and help keep the depression at bay.
Happy healing !!!

Keep on sip, sip, sipping! Also, give yourself permission to sleep and rest as much as you need to. You've just undergone major surgery.
I tried to walk too far once I was home from the hospital and over did it. Wore myself out completely.
You'll do great!
Hi, Congrats on making it to the loser's bench!
Your daughter sounds lovely; I"d kill for a recliner right now, lol.
I'm also 2 days post op, and like you, have a lot of pain on my left side. I had to stay in the hospital an extra night because I was getting light headed and almost passing out, but the nurse thought it was that the pain killers were too strong for me. Now that I've been discharged, I only took 1 pill instead of 2 (they gave me the choice of 1 or 2 hydromorphone tablets every 4 hours) and I feel much better; no lightheadedness at all, thank God, and it is enough to cut down on the pain.
I find coughing hurts the most, with walking, and moving from sitting to standing or vice versa a strong second.
I live in Northern Ontario and was asked to stay near the hospital for the next few days so I rented a room and my friend Leslie is staying with us. The room is clean, and we have use of a little kitchenette, as well as a bathroom. I already feel more comfortable than I did in the hospital.
I am just focusing on my fluids for now. I have some premier protein but think I will try that tomorrow as I still need to get in lots more water and I don't want to get dehydrated. I was supposed to stop my water pills for one month but my blood pressure got too high so I had to start them again. I'm hoping I can get away with just taking one every two or three days instead of every day. My legs, feet, and hands were so swollen and my blood pressure was so high the nurse told me I'd better take one today, at least, so I did.
It feels strange to not feel hungry at all, and to not care about food one iota, lol. My friend asked if it would bother me if she ate in front of me and I told her to eat whatever she'd like to eat. It doesn't bother me at all.
Good luck!
This is not easy, is it? I'm just glad that every day will get better and better and pretty soon these early days will be behind us.

It's nice that your husband took over meal prep. I'm sorry you're feeling hungry. My stomach growls like crazy but I don't feel hungry. I think the pain makes me not hungry.
Every day will get better and soon we will barely remember the pain and early struggle and we'll be losing weight and feeling great! I can't wait!

Good morning!
Over the next few days and weeks you are going to discover the difference between head hunger and desire.
I have never ever felt hungry since surgery.
Perhaps it is a bit early and your surgery hasn't triggered the necessary hormones of appetite suppression yet. You have to put life and this surgery in perspective. All the foods that made us MO are still there. So is your brain. Learning self control in the journey is half the battle.
The RNY is designed specifically for hunger control.
I have had quite a bit of head hunger since surgery.
I am a widow so I need to feed my 3 children. Kettlemen's bagels with smoke meat & Swiss cheese had my head swooning. Took them out for dinner & I thought I would die when the burgers & fries came out. I was not hungry but it didn't mean I did not desire them. Made 200 chocolate chip, oatmeal, walnut cookies for a potluck and the smell in my home was devine. Head hunger sweeps in.
I don't ever really feel hungry. I usually feel weak and know that it is time to have something to eat or drink.
Once you are further along, you will discover that the water/teas/protein shakes & what ever your diet (purreed, soft) is at that time will calm the voices in your head.
Give yourself a break!
Remember all that is important right now to to stay hydrated.
SIP? WALK? TOOT ? REST? REPEAT
Hope this helps ....
Take care and always come back here. We will be your biggest support.

Dr. Moazzez is my surgeon, and my surgery will also be at Fair Oaks Hospital! My surgery is scheduled for 3/6/17. Reading about your experience was helpful! I also try to go to the bariatric support group meeting at Fair Oaks- I have found both the support group and the forum helpful and informational.
I wish you a speedy recovery!!!
