Hello everyone! I'm just getting the process started to have gastric bypass surgery. I have my first appointment on the 13th, which I'm excited about!! ?

I was just wondering what the initial timeframe is from your first appointment to surgery? I've heard it could be one month to a year to have surgery. Any and all comments are welcome on this issue! ?

I'm so excited that I found this site and I know it's going to help me on this journey. Thanks to all who comment, your comments are greatly appreciated!!

I think it depends a lot on your health. Your insurance company and your surgeon have timelines you might have to follow as well, but certain steps are needed to protect your health first.

My first appt was Jan 28 and my surgery was May 16. I was pretty healthy overall, even though I still had several serious comorbidities. My insurance required 3 months nutritional counseling so that took the longest for me.

I'm very excited for you, I hope it goes super smooth!! Good luck!

My insurance required a 6 month supervised diet. However, my original case worker was a pos so I had a bunch of stuff I needed to do when I was supposed to be done.

Ill be having surgery about a month before what would've been a year.

If you are giong through insurance, call and ask to speck to the insurance specialist at your surgeon's office.  They will have the best idea of your situation.  Other than that, up to a year.  I would be surprised if you could get all the pre-op requirments completed in one month.  I did it in about 2 months and that was because I had recent supervised diet failure history.

My process was about nine months. I finished up all of the tests they required (and didn't have to do another sleep study because I was already diagnosed with apnea and compliant with my CPAP machine) my insurance, BCBS, required 6 months continuing monitoring with a dietitian, and then scheduling for the OR took an extra 3 weeks because it was summertime. Best 9 months I've ever spent, since my new insurance through my hubbys work no longer offers bariatric coverage at all. I had surgery 9/28/16

For me it was July of '16 at orientation, and end of February will be my surgery.  There were no complications from any tests (sleep apnea, etc.) and I kept all appointments up.  7.5 months.  I've read that some can be up to a year and a half depending on the health status and what path you have to take to get it all done.  I was told they try and have it within 1 year of the orientation date.

Good luck!  And if you get thinking "Can I really do all of this?" and get discouraged and such, remember why you started.  Don't quit, you're worth it.
