Aspirin Post RNY

I just read the posts about NSAIDS and RNY and I'm very concerned about a possible ulcer.  I have been on Ecotrin 325 and a blood thinner (Plavix) since I had a heart attack 8 years ago.  I am 3 weeks out from surgery and no one has mentioned stopping any of these drugs (except for the 5 days before surgery).  At my 10 day post-op visit, the nurse confirmed my current meds.  Again no mention of stopping aspirin.

I just sent an email to my center and I hope to receive a reply soon!  Thanks again all, for the information you can only get from one another!

Hi Mary,

I had to stop my aspirin and Plavix(3 stents in one artery about 7 years ago) 5 days prior to surgery as well. After surgery they started me on the Plavix in a day or 2 and restarted the aspirin 7 days after surgery(I think that's what it was). My cardiologist and WLS surgeon made the decision prior to surgery. Me staying on the aspirin and plavix was one of the main reasons why the surgeon did the sleeve on me instead of the RNY. If I need to do the revision to RNY down the road then it will be much bigger issue but buy that time I will have lost enough weight that I will not as much of a safety concern if I need to stop the aspirin all together.

I hope you get this resolved quickly.

Chris

Weighing up the possibilities of ulcers vs heart attack.  I know which one I would risk.  You need to make your decision along with your cardiologist

Do they have you on a PPI like Prilosec/omeprezole? They usually give you that right after surgery, and it helps protect the stomach as well... at least at my surgeon's office they said if there was a need to take it they would have you taking prilosec. Don't know if that applies to long term use as well.

Thanks to all for all the great comments!

My center referred me to my cardiologist as they could not tell me to stop or change meds they did not prescribe.  I spoke to my cardiologist and he reduced my dosage to 81mg.  He will review again when I get closer to goal.
