Medication Question for RNY
My center stated six weeks after surgery I can swallow pills and capsules. I currently take Celebrate chewables and happy with those. I have to open the caps for three meds now and no matter what I mix them in I can taste them. One med is to protect my gall bladder and gets all gummed up and is quite yucky. The acid reducer is tiny little balls that don't dissolve and the doxycycline is yucky as well. I tried putting them in a protein shake and it gets a bit bitter and the little balls just sink to the bottom, even in a blender. The gall bladder cap is much larger than the other two. Mixing those caps in food makes it taste bitter.
Im also on two BP and a generic synthroid, plus Crestor which I crush. Hopefully as I lose weight the BP and Crestor can be stopped. BP is good now. One of the BP meds is enalapril; an ACE inhibitor to protect my kidneys d/t diabetes. I had a week of high BP as I was in a lot of pain and pretty stressed out, but that is resolved now.
Will I harm myself if I swallow those before schedule? My six weeks in 2/1/17.

Retired nurse here...have mixed meds in just about every vehicle. Are you allowed applesauce? The texture, of the applesauce, may take away some of the bitterness of the meds. What about SF pudding? Don't use REAL food, as it may mentally block you from that food forever
If nothing else works, ask your pharmacist for additional ideas

We Can Do Hard Things
My surgeon recommends not swallowing any medications or vitamins bigger than an M&M. So, I'm on chewable vitamins, and my iron pills are smaller than a pea, so I'm good there.
If I were you, I would consult my surgeon before making any decisions on this, though.

I would continue opening the caps. But pills are fine to swallow. Many of us were taking pills in the hospital the day after surgery. If they are irritating you going down, crush them for a while longer.

The Actigall is NASTY stuff, isn't it? Hang in there for a few more days. I absolutely hate taking pills. I have gotten weaned off of everything except for my anxiety meds and a doxycycline for my rosacea. I use the patch vitamins now, so I don't have to swallow any, and I hate chewables with a passion.
