Weird water question

I know, I know, sip all day. Try water at different temps. But I still struggle at one month out to get more than 50 ounces.

So, if I can eat 2-3 ounces at a time, why can't I drink the same amount in water. One ounce sits like a brick in my stomach. Why?

I had to add Crystal Light to get the water down for the first year or so.

What White Dove said -- there's something about the water tension that did the same thing to me.  Somehow, adding Mio or Crystal Light made the water tension different, and I was able to drink more easily.  Even now, I can drink a lot more water at a time with something added -- or as a hot drink, like tea or coffee.

Thank you, thank you for posting this!!!  I was just telling my husband yesterday (and this morning again) that I feel "water logged".  I feel like I've had gallons and gallons of water when in reality it has only been a few stubborn sips that seem to just hang around in my pouch for what feels like an eternity!!!

So glad I read this, I'm going to go out and get some drops tomorrow and hopefully that will work.  It was honestly starting to get to me.  I love water straight, and this whole sip thing (instead of my usual gulps) is hard enough...then to have my sips not be draining right...no thank you!

Thank you for the suggestions!

I didn't have RNY, but still struggle with getting my fluids in every day.  Before surgery I could drink 64 ounces of Crystal Light Green Tea with Peach and Mango every day with no problems, but I could also guzzle 16 oz at a time.  I never drank water.  Now, I can't stand the taste of my old favorite, and it took me until recently to find ANYTHING that tasted good to me besides water.  For me, it ended up being Lipton Diet Green Tea with Citrus.  I love it, and it makes drinking so much easier.  That, plus I've finally found a coffee I like after surgery, so between them, and iced tea, I only have to drink plain water occasionally.

Just keep trying all kinds of things, hopefully you'll find something that works for you as well!!  Hang in there!

There is a difference in surface tension between the fluud in your stomach and the water you are drinking. You will liteeally get pain from drinking. Adding a surfactant to your water changes its surface tension and makes it go down easier. Crystal light often works.

While I agree adding a surfactant to my water does make it go down easy, I am left with a "huh?"

WHAT is a surfactant??? lol

WHAT does "surface tension" mean??? also, lol!

What everyone else said. Pre op, I didn't drink anything sweet, not juice, definitely not crystal light. Now, it is the only way I can hit my water target. I'm starting to be able to use just an herbal tea bag in my water bottle, or lemon/lime slices.

Also, I use a sports bottle. The contego ones from Costco. It used to bug me a bit seeing adults sucking on sports bottles outside a gym setting. But I caved. I drink exponentially more water that way.

Thank you everyone!  I'm going to the store today.  I've tried decaf tea and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.  I didn't used to like crystal light, but I'll try it.  Right now my taste buds are on overdrive.  I am sensitive to taste and smell.  It's like I'm pregnant again (I promise I'm not).

I did drink about 4 ounces of apple juice last night and it slid right down.  I don't drink juice, but I'm constipated right now.  The miralax was so gross, I was gagging.  Well, pre-surgery I never drank apple juice because of its laxative effects on me.  Still hasn't worked, so also picking up some milk of magnesium.  I'm sure the constipation is related to the low water intake.  So......

I'll hit the store and pick up a variety.  I'm getting used to throwing things out that I don't like.  At first it bugged me, but I'm looking at it as another cost of the surgery.  It's not wasteful.  I buy samples where I can.  What is wasteful is it sitting in my pantry taking up space when no one will use it.

Anyway - thanks for the tips everyone.
