Am I eating too much at 4 weeks post op?
Good morning everyone! I had my one month follow up and nutrition class this week and I was told I needed to get more protein in. I completely understand that and I want to do well so I've been pushing to do this however by doing this my calorie intake has increased quite a bit. I've gone from 400 calories a day to 650-700. I know, I know....stop thinking about calories and just focus on protein. Im sure this is what most of you will say and also what my Nut said but I cant help being scared. Here is an example of my menu from today:
breakfast:
1/4 cup of 2% milk with decaf coffee
1 egg + 1/2 banana + 1 tsp of PB
snack:
Simply Protein bar ( I was told to try these by my Nut to get more protein since I cant do more then 1 shake a day)
Lunch:
3 oz. grilled top sirloin stake
snack:
1 premier protein shake
dinner:
3 oz chilli
TOTALS: PROTEIN:79g, FAT 24g, CARBS 38g
please note I am also trying to stay as low carb as possible but the Simply protein bar had made that number go up a bit.
It's funny how different we all are, because I had no restrictions on any meats at all... of course, I didn't start eating any of them until 6 weeks, and then it was almost impossible to get more than 1oz down.
However... tuna got stuck so many times that I quit eating it, yet, a ribeye has always graced my pouch with respect and dignity!
Tuna is a great protein, as is shrimp and of course, beef... but at 4 weeks, I was NO WHERE near protein goals... and I just nodded my head to the NUT, and went about my business... I think I drank more protein shakes to make up the difference, but no way I could do it with food.

I was the same. I had no meat restirictions either and I could eat ribeye from the beginning. I had to supplement with protein shakes and still do on small pouch days and I am 10 months out. I still haven't tried tuna. I cant get past the smell yet.

I don't get the rationale to limit you to one protein drink a day @4weeks out. IMO protein bars are fancy candy bars. Not worth the carb vs. the satisfaction they provide. Also I'd drop the banana for now-- again just carbs/sugar. (And curious-- what does one do with the remaining 1/2 of banana??)
at that point by I know I was doing 2 protein shakes a day, and 1 meal and 1 snack.

Protein bars are addicting to me... and they are so much like candy bars... I only eat them sporadically, either in an emergency, or when I'm craving sweetness. Maybe 1-2 times a month...
The Vets here had my radar up on these before I even had surgery.
I was drinking 2-3 shakes at only 4 weeks out.
