Hi there!
I just joined the site and wanted to quickly introduce myself...I hope this is an appropriate place to do so!
I am currently going through all the motions to get RNY, hopefully late May to early June. I have completed all requirements for my insurance, been cleared by behaviorial health, and should be cleared by my dietitian and physical therapist soon. I was a smoker (ð?'??) and my physician has expressed adamently that he will not perform the surgery until I am 6 months nicotine free. It hasn't been terribly difficult to quit (unless I am drinking alcohol ?) and part of me wishes I wouldn't have disclosed that I smoked because I am so incredibly ready to have this surgery. Waiting another 4 months will be quite difficult, but I know telling him was the right move. I'll wrap it up for now. I have an amazing support system, but I'd really love to create some friendships with people who have gone through the process or are currently going through it, like me. It's always comforting to know you're not alone in something that is going to change your life forever. Thanks for listening, I hope to talk to some of you soon!

it's best to be honest because smoking combined with this surgery can be dangerous. In fact, a lot of surgeons will test your blood for nicotine a few weeks before surgery and then again right before surgery. So it's likely your surgeon would have found out anyway, and then refused to do the surgery. I know it's really hard to quit smoking (I quit several years ago), but many, many people have done it. I feel for you, though - it's not easy!!
Welcome! I'm sure waiting is hard.. I think we've all been there but a few months in the long run really won't matter. Good luck with the rest of the process.

Hi there!
There are so many here that have started posting and learning before their surgeries, there's nothing but good that can come from it (I learned a multitude of things here prior to surgery).
If you join the daily Menu post, you will have a chance to learn a TON of stuff... least is looking at the differing menu ideas so you'll find things to eat as you progress through.
You'll also learn a TON more than any of the centers have to teach you! You'll learn from those VETS out there that still post here even years after reaching (and mostly maintaining) their goals... and you'll get to know a lot of people that way as well.
Good for you for kicking the cigarettes to the curb!!!

From what I've heard you don't heal as well if smoking. That's why most surgeons test for it to make sure. I have never smoked so I chuckled when I saw that they tested me for nicotine at my first appointment and pre-op. They want to make sure you are as healthy as possible!
