So... I had RNY last Friday

Ever since, I've had pretty bad nausea and constipation (and mild to moderate pain under my sternum)

Is this pretty normal?

I've been using Dulcolax and suppositories, but with little desired affect...

How did y'all deal with it?

I have a capful of miralax in my coffee or tea every morning. I get the costco brand. It works!

At my folks' recommendation, I was taking as many as four doses of various laxatives, yet nothing happened for a week. Then...we'll, let's just say I don't take them at all anymore. O_o

Completely normal.  I didn't have anything regular happening for probably ten days. I was getting worried but Dr. W. wasn't.  Just told me to get some Milk of Magnesia (they make sugar free). I did and six hours later everything was good.  Never needed it again, although Dr. said I might need it once a wee****il I'm eating something of substance.

If I take pain pills, I pay with constipation.  I was sent home from the hospital with directions to take stool softener.  Sometimes I use a Fleet enema if the suppositories don't work.  My normal after surgery includes fiber pills, laxatives, suppositories, x-lax, Imodium, Gas-x, and enemas.

Some days, I don't need any help, other days I deal with diarrhea or constipation.  I look at it like a car that worked perfectly, but got in a wreck and was never the same after it was repaired.  I do whatever I need to do and don't let it stop me from enjoying life.

Both can be related to not getting enough water -liquids.

I use miralax and magnesium, but even that will not help me if I don't drink enough water during the day.

If this is going for a few days...Ugh..Make sure you have Vaseline and gloves ready... Because you may need them both...

I learned the hard way that I can't allow "no go" for more than 36 hours... When things get "hard" it is really painful to try to pass it... Use enema or even castor oil enema to make sure you can have BM.

Dulcolax - does nothing for me, it never worked.

Hello

I had my RNY Wednesday...

I too had lots of pain in the area surrounding my sternum.

Keep in mind that that is where your new pouch is. I found that is where the gas seems to go. Remember to get up and move around as much as possible and rest in a recliner or upright position.  30 degrees is minimum until you have passed all the gas.

I must say that I thought constipation was going to be my biggest problem post op.

I have the extreme opposite... Diarhea probably about 7 or 8 times yesterday.  You sit there and wonder if this is normal.

I am getting all my water in & caffeine free teas as an added hydration bonus.

Unfortunately any surgery that involves manipulation of the bowels and intestines may result in a "lazy bowel". This often leads to constipation.

I think that a good dose of Milk of Magnesia (sugar free) will clean you out.

I know it is hard but you definitely have to get those fluids in or you will get caught up in a vicious  circle of constipation.

Hope this helps & good luck!

Take care

Sandra
