How good are you with NOT drinking before, during, and after eating?

FWIW I have found food sits much better if I take a few tiny sips of water during a meal.  Particularly with dense protein.

It was the hardest thing after surgery. I didn't expect it at all.

You can drink right up until you start eating. No reason not to.

Do not drink during or after.

The only way we feel sated from eating is because dense foods expand our stomach. The expanded stomach sends a signal to our brain that we're "full."

Slider foods or drinking with meals or right after washes the food through. Our stomach won't expand. We'll stay hungry. And miserable. After 30 minutes or so, the food has passed through, and it's ok to drink again.

It's a struggle to learn not to drink during or after meals. But it is a crucial habit, and you'll feel better in the long run.

What Grim said.  I think this was absolutely my hardest thing to get over.  I'm constantly looking at the clock after eating to see if time is up.  I even have DH trained to remind me after dinner when it's been at least 30 minutes.

After about 2 months, I found that drinking up until I eat is OK, at first, though, I couldn't.

I just don't put a drink on the table for myself. ever. If we are out, and the waiter brings me a glass of water, I move it away from me.

I used a timer for a long time after eating... now I mentally glance at the clock, and if I have eaten something that is even remotely stuck, it might be 2-3 hours before I can drink again, or else is makes it worse.

This is the one rule that I've adapted to, and honestly am very good with.

Once I understood that not having our pyloric valve, and how it all worked, it made sense to me, thus it made it easier to follow the rule.

There's no reason not to drink 30 minutes before a meal anymore.

And I just don't put a drink on the table during meals. Solves that one. I also started practicing these behaviours like 6 months before surgery, so it's I guess it's old hat now.

the only time I struggle with drinking before thirty minutes are up is in a restaurant, where my instinct is to order decaf coffee while others have dessert. It only happened once, and I didn't even realize it until we were in the car going home!

it was a hard habit to get used to, but I've followed it religiously.  My clinic suggests waiting a full hour after eating, so most of the time, I do (the few times I haven't, though, I've waited at least 30 minutes)

The only time I drink right after meals is when I try to eat more to gain weight.... like now...

so .. if you are serious about losing and maintenance - stop drinking after a meal. the before - I stop app 10 min before my meal. it is almost always enough time for the liquid to leave my pouch and be ready for food.

I've never heard of waiting before eating.

Ive had no problem with waiting after I eat for the most part. I had a small adjustment period and then was good with it. I think you just get used to it.

That is a tough habit to break.  Someone (Grim?) posted a link to a YouTube video that shows what happens when you drink right after eating... using applesauce and you can see that everything leaves the stomach right away.  First causes your stomach to be empty, but also all that food enters into the intestine and can upset things.  It became much easier for me to wait that 30 minutes after eating once I saw what actually happens.

I also do not put a drink near me when eating, and if I am at a restaurant I have the waitperson take my water away.
