What is this "full" you speak of?

Dear fellow RNYers,

The dietitian at my practice emphasized that we were to eat until "satisfied, but never full." Well, I'm three weeks out today, and I haven't felt a sensation I'd call "full" yet. I mean, I'm not hungry (except in my head) either. I eat my recommended +/- 1/4 cup of whatever and stop but never feel full. I have, on a few occasions, felt something like acid reflux. By any chance, is THAT what full feels like now?

at one time I felt an acid reflux sensation, but that was when I had a stricture (that sensation eventually evolved into not being able to keep anything down - that's when I knew there was a problem).  Other than that time, I just feel uncomfortable.  I can't really explain the feeling other than it's just...uncomfortable.  I know if I keep pushing it, I'm going to vomit.

your acid reflux sensation may very well be your new "full" signal, though.  It may not necessarily be a stricture.  Some people's noses run when they're "full".  There are all kinds of strange signals.

Hi

Just a bit curious, when did you get your stricture and what did they do to manage the situation?

I actually had two - one at four weeks out and one at eight weeks out  (they're not uncommon during the first three months post-surgery.  My surgeon said 5-8% of RNYers get them.  After the first three months, they're very rare).

They're easily "fixed" - they do an upper endoscopy and just stretch it out a little with this instrument with a balloon thingie on the end.  Just takes a few minutes and you're knocked out, so you don't feel anything.  Afterwards you feel 100% better.

when I had them, I first got a feeling like I had acid reflux after I ate.  A few days later, I started vomiting occasionally after I ate.  Soon it got to the point where I couldn't keep anything down - so I called my surgeon's office and they had me make an appt at the hospital for an upper endoscopy.

I can't tell you what my full feels like. My overfull feels like chest pain.  It's not painful, just really uncomfortable.

So I am just over three weeks out as well and I have heard the whole "eat until satisfied" thing, too.  This is what I know...  My "FULL" is a tightness in the middle of my chest.  It makes me want to raise my arms up in the air and walk around hoping it will go down.  Not a good feeling, so I'm guessing that the dietitian means to eat, but stop before feeling that.  This is a hard thing to do.  Especially so early out, it takes hardly anything for me to have that feeling, so my meals are still minimal.

As an added bonus, my "FULL" feeling of chest pressure also comes with a runny nose.  I'm in the same boat as you, my brain cannot wrap itself around such tiny, tiny meals.  It keeps telling me that I couldn't possibly be done eating and to keep trying.  Grrrrrrrr.......

Yeah....chest tightness...it's odd.  I don't get the runny nose thing...or at least I don't think I do...I haven't noticed that yet.
