What's on Your Monday Menu, RNYers?
New Year's Day brunch at my friend's was fun, as usual. My biochemist neighbor was there. He has a PhD in biochemistry and said he's read many peer-reviewed articles the last few months about hormonal changes that occur in the gut after RNY, and the fact that Type 2 diabetes is often resolved (he has it). He's also talked extensively with a friend of his who teaches in the Nutritional Sciences dept, and has now decided that he's going to go for it - at age 75!! We probably talked for an hour about it - so fun!!
QOTD: I used to clip coupons but rarely do anymore. I usually take a glance at them, but they're always for brand-name items, and like some of the other posters, I usually go for generics, which tend to be cheaper even after factoring in the coupon.
B: plain Greek yogurt with homemade cranberry sauce
S: protein/Miralax shake or latte, coffee with half & half
L: small piece of zucchini lasagna (or the rest of the ingredients that didn't make it in to the final product - which is about 2 oz of mozzarella plus some ground turkey with marinara sauce)
D: might make some pork cassoulet today in my Instant Pot. If so, a cup of that. If not, the rest of the beef stew (about a cup) or turkey meatballs.
another Greek yogurt if I can afford the calories
exercise: water aerobics
Hey all! Last day for me also- dreading going back and it is yucky and rainy here for the past 3 days! Today my niece is coming over with her new pup, and english bulldog and we are having playdate with our 4. She is a real juggernaut, once she starts running she head buts you so I'm hoping it goes well with our little ones. 2 of ours are quite elderly pups and one is half blind so hopefully she is not rude to them.
I'm making crispy duck in the oven today with rice (for DH and guest) and roasted carrots, collards and cabbage. Never made duck before and didn't realize it takes darn 3 hours to roast in the oven so at least my kitchen/living room is staying toasty with that going and the dishwasher also.
QOTD: YESSSSSS I'm a really big couponer! I used to be waaaay worse and had 2-3 years of toothpaste, shampoo, etc. Now I just have about a years worth of shampoo and conditioner under the sink- it was free or next to it so snatched it up with the coupons. I'm on the coupon mom, she lays it all out by store and the printable coupons you can just click the link and print- so easy to save money.
Frood for today:
B: egg white, 2 prot pancakes/decaf/CM milk
L: DUCK, carrots, cabbage, collards
We may go to some thrift stores after niece leaves
Happy Monday! I am jealous of all of you talking about having the day off. I am back at work...whee. The weekend was nice. We had wwaaayyyy too many teenagers over for on NYE for my son's birthday. He invited way more people than he really wanted to have because he figured everyone would be busy. I had 12 'maybe's at 3pm and by 5pm I had a house filled with 16 teenagers. :O I rushed to the store and whipped up taco buffet for everyone. They descended upon it like locusts! It was crazy. Teenagers can EAT! Everyone seemed to have a great time and we survived. Went to see Rogue One last night which was a huge treat for me. The Guy doesn't like going to movie theaters but since our kiddo from Dallas was all excited with me we out voted him and we went. Great movie FYI. Also...full disclosure...I ate SO much popcorn. Yummy. No butter but still I am sure it is terrible for me. I survived though and this morning the scale was at 121.0 which is all good.
Heart doctor visit on Friday went pretty well. He started me on some new medications that should strengthen my heart. Basically he said if it improves my function (EF value) from 40% back up in the 50% range...perfect. If the EF drops to 35% then I will need to have the surgery to put in an internal defibrillator. Glad to avoid it for now and comforted that he expects the meds to do their job. The draw back is that now that I am smaller and my blood pressure is in the low-normal range it will be tough to get me to be able to tolerate enough of the cardiac meds to help. It is actually possible he might put me on a medication to raise my blood pressure at some point. LOL Oh irony! Either way I am less stressed about it and started the new meds. The side effects are difficulty with memory and low energy. I am on half of the tiny dose this week and will be going up over the next weeks. Hoping that I do well without much side effects. If not, well...forgetfulness will be ok. I just hope I only forget annoying things. LOL
QOTD: I don't use any coupons unless they are on the shelf at the store for the product I am already reaching for.
Menu: Homemade Greek yogurt with granola; L: Grapes and cheese stick; D: Left over pasta fagioli (pasta bean soup); S: Apple and Greek yogurt
Accountability: Weighed 121.0 this morning. Popcorn was so salty my ankles are puffy this morning. I am doing good food wise I think. Smoking quit is still not going well but I did get a script for the Chantix from the heart doctor. He doesn't want me to start it until I get on the high dose he wants for the heart meds. I will keep doing what I can on my own and start the Chatix in February.

Good morning. I'm so very excited - only 10 days until surgery. I'm off today- back tomorrow. Only 4 days this week and 2 Days next week. I will be off for 4 weeks. So the pressure is on to get everything done at work. I may work from home a couple of days a week while I'm off just so I don't get too behind. I have to call my centre tomorrow as they haven't called me about my pre-op visit.
QOTD- couponing really isn't a big deal here. Occasionally because DH works in a grocery store he will get coupons for free products but that's about it. What's really big up here is price matching. I used to hate doing it but now we have apps with flyers in them. I work in reverse. So if I'm buying potatoes, I search the app for potatoes, tap the pic from the flyer where it's on sale, and then show it to the cashier. It's so much faster and easier than looking through all the flyers and bringing them all with me to the store.
