Food

Had my two month surgery anniversary on the 18th. Anyone else get to the point where you would almost rather not eat? Seems most things upset my stomach and nothing really taste right or good. Don't get me wrong I'm not regretting my surgery one bit. I'm a little down cause I have only lost 36lbs since surgery though and a total weight loss before and after surgery of 105 lbs. Very happy to have accomplished this but it just seems I'm not where I should be by now. I'm exercising and I'm doing my best with eating. I'm afraid I'm not getting enough food specifically protein in. Trying to stay optimistic here.

at the two-month mark I had lost 28 lbs.  And I've lost over 200 lbs in total.  So why are you worried?  You're within the normal range..

Being down 105 lbs should definitely make you optimistic!  Don't be afraid of not getting enough protein - track your intake.  I use MyFitnessPal (an app on my iPhone, also a website) to track what I eat, and it calculates calories, protein and carbs.  You want to make sure you have at least 60 g of protein a day and make a goal for 100 oz of water.  When I was two months out, I was relying on protein shakes for breakfast - I loved Chike iced coffee flavor that I ordered on Amazon.  Lunch would be egg salad or tuna salad or ground turkey with seasoning or flaky white fish, and dinner was the same.  I am a big fan of savory food so I eat a lot of chicken sausages and taco seasoning on my meats.  Start tracking what you eat and make sure you get your body the protein you need!  Depriving your body of protein won't help you.  Good luck!

Congratulations on your weight loss!

You have lost ONLY 36 lbs. 105 in total??? Are you kidding me?

That is amazing!!!! I often see people post their disappointment and I don't understand. 36 lbs is like (5) 7 lb. babies.

Celebrate this amazing journey... Be proud...

It took many of us years to pack it on.

We need to be patient as it slowly comes off.

Stay positive! You are doing awesome!

Take care & keep up the great work!

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. It just seems I'm behind others of my size. I'm still 378 lbs and it seems I'm losing a lot slower than people my size. I know I'm suppose to really take advantage of the first year and the first few months especially since it comes off the easiest during this time.

As far as protein I have not been able to drink the shakes since surgery. The taste makes me throw up if I force myself to drink them. Also chicken and turkey make me throw up unless I eat just a small bite or two. Fish I can eat, so that is mostly what I'm eating. Egg salad and tuna salad make me sick as well. Any other food tips are greatly appreciated.

You're doing wonderful! You've lost so much weight already. The important things are getting your protein, your vitamins, and some activity. Watch your carbs. The weight loss will follow. I've had days where I just don't want to eat, so I feel you on that.

Have you tried a different brand of shakes? Are yours pre-made, or do you mix in a powder? I know that several here really like the Unjury brand (I cannot eat it because I have a weird sensitivity to can't handle gum), and others like the taste of the Syntrax Nectar line. There are sites and places that you can get sample packs of protein powders, like MyBariatricPantry.

Are you able to tolerate yogurt? I got to where I couldn't handle the shakes anymore, so I started making my own with Greek yogurt, unflavored protein powder, and a little frozen fruit (the small quantities of fruit in the shake don't make me dump) and extracts or sugar free syrups. When I first started, I got The Bariatric Foodie Guide to Perfect Protein Shakes by Nikki Massie (who runs the Bariatric Foodie blog), and there are some great recipes and tips in there. The kindle version is $6, but I have kindle unlimited, so it was free for me. She also has recipes on her website.

I hope that helps.

I have tried several different brands and have come to the conclusion it's the protein taste I can't do. So much wasted money on powdered and pre-made shakes as well.

your rate of weight loss depends on so many things - gender, age, metabolism, starting weight, whether or not you lost weight pre-surgery (people who lose weight prior to surgery tend to not have those big initial drops - probably because part of those "big drops" is water weight - and if you lost weight before surgery, that "water weight" is long gone).  We had the same starting weight - I was 373, and I was a slow (but steady...) loser.   Slower than you for sure!  Just stick to your plan and you'll get to where you want to be. You're actually losing at a pretty good clip.  I was really slow - but I made it!

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure with everyone if this was normal. Started at 483 and currently 378, so I'm very happy just wanted to make sure the loss s Nice surgery was normal and a wasn't messing up somehow.

Just wanted to share that I, too, could not tolerate protein shakes.  Approximately the first 8-10 weeks after surgery, I often didn't meet my protein and water goals.  I had a hard time eating and drinking anything.  And...I am a slow loser (I am four months out now and have lost just over 50 lbs since surgery - 89 total so far).

Members of this group and information that I read reminded me that it often takes about 12 weeks for your body to heal from the procedure.  Amazingly, at about 12 weeks, I started to physically feel better.  I was able to eat a little more and found one protein shake (Chike) - if made with water - that I could tolerate, but also found flavored protein water (miracle for me).  I now have no concerns about making my protein goals.

I am learning to live with the "slow" weight loss.  I can say that I have not yet had a stall and the numbers on the scale have a downward trend.

Stay positive!!
