What's on your Menu Today (PHOTO FRIDAY) RNYers?
Morning DD2!
My mom was also very big in ceramics back in the 80s and 90s. She made a ton of stuff. I think most of the family has a full nativity set she made.
Here are some Santas that she made, and the nativity set on my mantle.
Note: I actually have two nativity sets she made. One is just plain white glazed, the other is the hand painted one below. Sadly, she went to great lengths to print extra large labels on her computer so she would know which sets were in which box. One label says "WHITE NATIVITY," and the other is "COLORED NATIVITY." Sigh. She didn't even know how wrong that looks.

My Guy has created a family tradition for the holiday...we only buy figurine decorations that are people of color. The tree topper angel, several Santas around the house, and our one nativity are all little people of color. Social justice is always part of our celebration. Thankfully he has never labeled any boxes. :)

Mine don't like being called "little people." They prefer "statue-esque."

I love this effort at social justice. I live in a town that is soooooo not diverse. We try to discuss diversity with our children, but visuals are so important. This is really a huge issue with me in our conversations at home, and in my correction if they repeat a joke, or if we are discussing how people might feel in a situation, etc. We talk about how we always need to look at things from another person's point of view, and recognize how vastly different people's experiences are. So thanks for this wonderful idea.
Here's a somewhat funny story related to diversity, that illustrates this challenge. (I say somewhat funny, because it was also a little troubling.) Although I do believe my children are not intentionally judgemental, they make broad-stroke observations from lack of exposure, especially when younger. My now-18 son worked construction in the summers for a few years. The first year, about age 15, he was working in a town a little way away from us--more diversity in the people working because of the metropolitan location and also the construction industry. He really enjoyed one particular man he worked with and said he was trying to figure out where this man was from. "Mom, I think he is Hispanic, but I'm not sure and I'm going to ask him." The next day, he came home and said this man was from New Zealand. So, we realized that to our son, just darker skin suggested the broad category of "Hispanic." This was a real learning experience to me and my husband: how can you truly teach your children to value everyone without exposing them to everyone? I guess we hope they can generalize from a few experiences.
My Mother was ahead of the times, she bought me an African American Chatty Cathy when I was about 8 or 9 for Christmas....
