Carbs
I had my 3 month appointment and all is good except the Nut mentioned that my carb level are totally inadequate. She told me that my levels were around 40 and that I should be eating around 120/day. I'm a little freaked out because I am doing so well, and I don't want to slow down my weight loss yet. I'm more than half way and I want to keep the momentum going. So this is question for the Vets - should I continue doing what I am doing? or increase my carbs?
For God's sake whatever you do, do NOT increase your carbs. 40 isn't a lot - but there are many who eat even less than that daily. And many long term successful WLS peeps eat as few carbs as possible. Check out the threads on what everyone is eating. Look at the daily posts from those who are successful long term (beyond two or three years). I'm betting you notice a pattern there with regards to carb consumption.
Nutritionists don't seem to know what to do with us WLS folks.
For the love of all that is holy... DO NOT INCREASE YOUR CARBS.
Many nuts have either a) not been morbidly obese in their lifetime, b) have no idea how being obese and a lifetime of yo-yo dieting screws up our carb/calorie metabolism, c) have not read the ASMBS post-surgery diet guidelines whi*****lude keeping carbs under 50 a day in order to stave off cravings and blood sugar spikes, and reduce re-gain, d) are idiots, or e) some or all of the above.
When you are a few years down the road, play with carbs. But now, during your prime-time weight loss malabsorption period, is NOT the time to do so.
Even now, more than 5 years out, I stay around 50 a day (closer 100 in the summer when I bike and hike more regularly). I have no doubt that is why I have kept more than 180 pounds off for more than five years.

no, don't increase your carbs. What you are doing is working,so why mess with it? Just smile and nod at her and keep your carbs low. She foesnt know what she is talking about.
Interesting you report this because I just had my 6 month follow up this week and was told the same thing! I keep my carb intake low (20-30 a day) and do not eat bread, rice, pasta, refined sugar, etc but get my carbs from fruit and veg. She told me to increase carb count to 100-130 a day and I couldn't help it I laughed out loud and said "sorry but not a chance"
just her mentioning it scared me. I'm down almost 100 pounds and close to goal and things are working so I'm not changing a thing :)

Your nutritionist is a fool. We don't need ANY carbs.
If you are doing well, keep going.

120 carbs is what I was recommended from the very beginning I'm 3 years out I've eaten 120 carbs from the get-go and I've lost 230 pounds and staying very stable. That is total carbs not net carbs or anything like that. count all your carbs 120 will do you good you're not feel so deprived and you'll still lose weight I was at my goal at about a year-and-a-half. Good luck and don't be so nervous about carbs they're not totally your enemy.all that being said, be sure they are good carbs not GOOOOD carbs. Lol
I don't think anyone can *know with any certainty that that high of a carb count won't stall your weight loss. What works for one person may not so well for another. So if the OP is doing well and losing, feeling good--I would definitely not increase carbs. Just my two cents worth.

I believe you just made my point. What works for one won't work for another. Just because my "lucky" experience as previously stated, doesn't seem to be what most rny patients experience does not mean it wont work for someone else. I did not claim to * know what works for others with certainty. Just wanted to let them know there are possibilities other than total carb fear. Anyway I wish them luck and that they find what works for them either way.
