One week post op! Sipping question

RNY 11/21 and I have had pretty smooth sailing. The worst part has been the staples which I thankfully get out tomorrow. They pull and snag when I turn in bed, bend over or wear a bra...ugh! Sweet freedom tomorrow!!!

Question- the sipping thing - I sipped at first, getting water and protein in was very hard the first couple days. Now I am able to drink and burp normally, even chug many small gulps in a row without issue. I can down water, decaf coffee, broth, protein shake or any beverage fairly quick. Is this bad?

No.  You'll be able to drink more, faster as the swelling goes down. Drink away!

That's awesome to hear, thank you! I was worried that I was pushing it or possibly stretching my pouch! Can't wait for the swelling to go down, I feel almost pregnant!!

I would consult with your physician about chugging or gulping.  I was told to sip, sip, sip as not to stretch out the pouch, it was so hard for me too to get in my fluid or protein.  I am 2 months post-op and can take 2 nice swallows at a time now, which is heaven! Good luck and keep us updated. Congrats on getting the staples removed!

I am worried about stretching my pouch but also enjoy drinking normally! I am seeing my doctor tomorrow and will ask him about it. Thank you for the support!!!

You cannot, cannot, cannot stretch anything by drinking. Not even drinking carbonated beverages. It goes right through.

If you are drinking normally, that's great.

Thank you. Not my thread but I had my surgery the same day and I can drink normally.  I couldn't see how drinking on an empty pouch (cause yeah it should go right through) could hurt but was curious.

I guess the question is really what is "normal" drinking? In any case, sipping is what I've been told to do and my surgeon's office continues to tell me to sip. So, I do. It takes practice to remember to always have that bottle of water on hand. I have a nice big, glass bottle with a little hanger on it that makes it really easy to tote around. I actually have two and I rotate them into the dishwasher every couple of days. I also flavor my water with Torani sugar free fruit flavorings.

I have noticed that when I do drink too much at one time (not sipping), my pouch is quite uncomfortable (like there is a hard rock in there) for about 20 minutes. The discomfort is not normal and is actually a warning signal that you are overfilling.

I don't have any discomfort at all. Maybe a big painless burp, but nothing else.

I don't think you'll stretch your pouch from water.  Its like a funnel, water flows right on through.
