Vegan and Revision to RNYaa
Hi Jen - Now that I'm really assessing my diet, these same thoughts have crossed my mind. I'm sitting here right now trying to come up with a plan to try for the next couple of months. If I could avoid a risky revision, I would. I just have it in my mind that I can't do it. My first surgery was 3 years ago. I only lost 60 pounds... maintained for 1 year... then started gaining it back. I guess I want that big push that RNY will give me. I know I have to revamp my diet for the rest of my life to be successful this time. Trying to figure out what that should be. Thank you for sharing with me...

In would hate to be the one delivering bad news - but vegan - vegetarian is probably why you never reached goal.
I was hoping you need to revise due to medical issues - like GERD...
Based on my experience- my body is super efficient in storing any carbs. Only limiting carbs allows me to lose and maintain good weight.
So for me - no grains, starchy veggies, (including bens) .
Unfortunately- these are main source of proteins and nutrition for vegans - grains and beans.
At one time while following vegan diet I gained 50 lbs in 6 months. Doing everything right.., and I was feeling hungry most of the time.
Post op RNY - a lot of us make too much insulin in response to carbs - even complex carbs. Insulin is weight storing hormon. Too much Insulin prevents fat burning.
I can gain weight on 1200cal diet that is high in carbs but lose if I follow low carbs - low starch diet and eat 1400 or more. And Iow carbs does not make me hungry every 2 hours...
If I were dedicated to vegan - I would have to settle on being heavy, and VSG..

As I read these responses, I am not sure why all of this wasn't obvious to me before now. I also have PCOS, which means my insulin receptors are even worse at processing insulin. I have known I needed to eat a lower carb diet. I let non-medical and non-obese people tell me that the carbs in vegetables and grains would not cause any problems.
Re-evaluating everything I've done the last 2 years...

When I was vegan - vegetarian I was pushing a lot of soy protein. It was suppos to be healthy.
Yea... . Soy affected my thyroid. I be done asymptomatic hypothyroid. Cold, low energy, hungry, heavy bleeding, sleepy.. Etc. Only when I went no soy (what so ever- checking everything) for 6 months when my body recovered. Only few. Years later I lerned that I had soy allergy on top of everything else.

So, if you have a date, that means you are working with a surgeon. Did you explain to him that you were a vegan, which is when your VSG loss stopped? If you did, and he is pushing you forward without having you modify your diet first, I'd be sceptical of his intentions. He should want the best for your ultimate health and if your original tool is still functioning correctly, it would seem that dietary changes should happen first. Some surgeons are very profit oriented and forget that someone has to live with the consequences of a surgery.
I think it is commendable that you are trying to live ethically. But those choices are interfering with your health. As others have said, maybe there is a middle ground you can adopt. Good luck.

Thanks Jen. I did tell her that I'm vegan, but didn't tell her that I felt like that's when the weight loss stopped. I think I'm just now coming to that realization. Thank you for your comments. I still have a lot to think about. Lots of research this last week and my head is spinning!
