My first meal out!
on 11/22/16 7:21 pm
I'm one month out and my dietician cleared me to stop grinding food (just chewing really really well)! I went out with a friend to a Thai restaurant I frequent for lunch. I ordered a veggie and shrimp stir fry with brown rice. I explained my situation and asked for minimal oil. They were very accomodating.
It was weird to take 80% of it home (I only had about one spoon total of the brown rice). I ate the five small shrimp and a few of the softer veggies. It went well!
Eating out (even though it's weird) is so liberating!
Sounds like you handled it like a pro! Good job...

Be careful with rice. I don't think I have ever been so uncomfortable in my life, as I was after a forkful of rice! Ugh, I feel bloated just thinking about it...

Jeff its not a matter of white or brown rice its the fact that at a month out of surgery you ate rice. Rice should not even be in your vocabulary until you have reached goal. And it doesn't matter if you have one teaspoon, one tablespoon or 3 grains of brown rice, again its the fact that you are introducing rice into your meal plans this early out. You do know that your nerves are still healing at a month out. And before you tell me that your plan/centre "allows" it so did my plan. My Centre also pushed oatmeal, potatoes, whole wheat bread, whole wheat crackers and couscous. Guess what I totally ignored them and I made it to goal in under a year. I am 3 years post op and I can't physically eat rice because it hurts like hell and feels like I swallowed a brick, so I choose not to eat it, not to mention its a total waste of calories.
I am sorry if you feel I am being harsh, but rice (brown, white or otherwise) should not even be on your plate until you hit goal.
I totally encourage going out to eat, go to your fav places but remember you are eating now post WLS. Get the rice out! Take my advice or not but I think you have opened a very slippery slope this early out by eating rice.
Wishing you the best, I know how hard it is to "figure out" all this stuff early out.

Daisydoo, I love you dearly! You have helped me so much and been such a great support. Of course there is a "however" coming.
My doctor and my Dietician have told me that a couple of tablespoons of brown rice with a meal is just fine (as long as I eat it last). You obviously have strong feelings to the contrary :) I know from being a type 1 diabetic that brown rice converts to sugar much less and much slower then white rice. I've watched my blood sugars in action with both and it's amazing the difference.
I'm losing about half a pound a day so I'm very happy. I will meet my goal!
Thanks for your concern, truly.
Hugs,
Jeff

I respectfully disagree with your choice and your Doctor & Dietitian advising you to eat that but its all good. I only give advice so that I can help you continue to be successful. I have no problems with you disagreeing with me LOL LOL
I am glad that you are happy with your progress and confident that you will meet your goal, that's awesome!
I am about 20 -30 minutes drive from Oakville, its such a wonderful place, we have quite a few friends who live there and the waterfront is great there!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, all the best to you & yours!!

During your honeymoon period, you will lose weight whether you eat the rice or not. Whether it is best for your healing pouch at one month out, I am not sure. I occasionally- as in once every week or two or three had a carb.... honestly if you can be in the habit to skip it, it will make maintenance easier. I feel less liberty to eat certain foods now that I've lost the weight than when I was losing.
My Doc's mantra is "Protein first then veggies, then IF you have any room left fruit then carbs" He never says no carbs, just put it at the end of the list. If I was honest with myself, I wouldn't have had a carb until I passed a year out....really there is barely room even now if I am paying attention....At one month out it is hard to imagine after eating protein and some veggies you really had room for the rice....you had been given permission and you took it.
It starts in our minds....the habits now are so important....

Daisydoo you are right on point!! Oatmeal, potatoes, whole wheat bread, whole wheat crackers may be on the list...But they should be the last (dead last) things you eat till you get to goal.
The problem lies with testing areas that can later create danger. I say "why not try 2 oz of Pepsi? See if you dump??" Maybe you don't...Is that a good thing? I am saying that FROM FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE!!! I wish I had never gone down that road. I think what Daisy is saying is you may be going down a slippery slope you want to (need to) avoid till you reach goal and after. I didn't touch sugar for a year...I reached goal in 6 months and 10 days (190#). I started feeling pretty good about myself. Thought I would spread my wings...See what my taste buds have been missing. So I added more simple carbs...This and that. After 2 years I've gained 30 pounds! I'm going..."What happened"? Simple carbs are addicting. You don't want to go down that road...It's like an addict going back to "the stuff". IT REALLY IS!! DO NOT TEST THE WATER. You will lose the weight because you can only eat so much and you are moving a lot. But it becomes harder and harder to lose that last 20-40 pounds without some exercise and limiting you simple carbs. I've said this before...But go to your local support groups and find people who look near normal in weight and are a few years out. They have done these two things...Found some form of exercise (that works for them) and limiting their simple carbs.
I feel like a parent telling their child..."Don't stick your finger in that fan". Some will trust you and not do it...Others have to find out for themselves about fan blades...Brian
Another one...
