I ended up 60 pounds below my surgeon's goal for me. I'm not sure why they set goals so high, but don't let it stop you.

6'3" tall, male.

Highest weight was 475. RNY on 08/21/12. Current weight: 198.

My doctor pulled something similar with me last week when I had my appointment. I weighed in at 171.8 on their scale, and he declared me a success. When I told him my goal was still 30-40 lbs away, he got all serious and stuff and was like "welllllll, you may lose more, but you're really going to have to work hard. It's not going to be easy. You might not get there"... I was like, thanks dude. Hope the trip I sent you on with my surgery costs was a great one! Hmph.

I am ignoring his short little plump butt! Hahaha (and FTR, I think my surgeon is a phenomenal surgeon, but he's not a great WLS coach!)

Right!? I mean I got it when they told me that pre op. It is good to have realistic expectations of what surgery can do. I've seen people drop 150 pounds, and feel like a failure because they can't drop the last 20. But I think there's a way to keep perspective without telling me I've almost maxed out my losing!

Can I ask what your start weight was?  I have no doubt at all that you are going to far surpass that number.

RNY Jan 12, 2017 Lost 137 lbs but regained 60.

77 lbs lost and counting!

Losing the regain! I got this!

My high weight was 378. I don't think that's where I'll end up either! Thanks!

Ok, I know they say opinions are like a**holes, and everyone has one, but I call BULLSHI& on your doc!!!  You can be successful if you follow your plan.  My highest weight ever was 369 and I went into surgery at 351, so very close to your starting weight.  I am now maintaining around 170.  It's possible but it takes work.  You can absolutely do it if you eat protein forward, low carb, track your calories, get your butt moving, and don't drink with or after meals.  I am proof it can be done, and many many many people who came before me are further proof (in fact it was our very own Grim's signature line of 200+ lbs lost that initially made me think, "my god, can I do this?  Can this work?".  Is it easy?  Hell no but you have the tool and you can make the decisions every single day that can make you lose below 290-230 lbs!  I hate that a doctor would even try to discourage you from going for more.

And naturally, age and height and other factors do come into play - for all I know, you are 6'1" and 230 would be a healthy weight for you.  I had RNY at 36 and I am 5'5".

Sorry if it seems like I went on a rant - I just don't want those idiotic words to sear into your brain and make you give up.  Keep on trucking and you may surprise yourself at how capable you are!  :)

Thanks! I agree completely. Oh how I wish I was 6'1" haha I'm 5'4". So I don't think 230 is where I think I should end up either! Like you said, just keep doing what I know I need to do!

And no apologies necessary! This is a rant welcome space hahah

thanks again

I'm 5 ft 3, and it's Daisy's weight that made me consider 130 as a goal. I know that I'm very small boned. In spite of my size, I've never needed wide shoes, my ring finger is 6.5 and I can easily wrap my fore finger and thumb around my opposite wrist. But when I talked to the dietician, she said that goal was unreasonable, that we can expect to lose 65% of our excess weight, so that's what she wanted me to use as a goal weight. I figure it's just a number for her to put in to her chart. But by her calculation, my final weight should be 175.

She clearly doesn't know about the wonderful group of weightloss warriors I've found here.  You guys make me believe that I can get to my true goal- which remains at 130 no matter what the dietician says.

they go by the averages, which is something like 70% of excess weight.  If you're really diligent about it, you can do much better than that - a lot of people on here do.   Like a lot of other OH'ers, 70% wasn't good enough for me.  It thrills surgeons, though.

I truly feel blessed to work with my surgeon and his group.  He never set a goal weight for me, but discussed with me where I want to end up and worked with me to get there.  He's been nothing but supportive.  He has me come into his office monthly, without an appointment, to check my body composition since, in his mind, that number is just as important as your actual weight.  His old dietitian never pushed carbs (except when I was malnourished . . . but that's a different story), and helped me with nutrition for runners (she decided to not come back from maternity leave.  I have an appt with the new dietitian next week, so we'll see if my luck continues).  When I revised, he told me my loss would be slow, but that I shouldn't get discouraged.  Now that I'm back down to my goal (but want to go a bit lower) he has agreed to help me lose it in a way that doesn't hurt me nutritionally.  I love the support I get from my group.
