Hello! RNY in 2 weeks!
Hello! I've lurked on this forum for bit and wanted to introduce myself. I'm scheduled for a RNY on December 1st. I had my pre op nutrition meeting today and am starting a "shrink your liver" diet tomorrow to be on until the day before surgery. I'm extremely excited and nervous. Nervous about "giving up" my horrible eating habits and a bit nervous about recovery - I have a very active 3 year old. I'm more excited though - can't wait to get this started.
I've ordered a bunch of protein drink samples for after surgery and it looks like I'll be able to get vitamins through my insurance which is nice. Does anyone have any suggestions for products/things to take to the hospital/things to have a home post-op?
Thanks!
Susan

Hello! Fellow-newbie here :D I've got a very active almost-five year old and I hope keeping up with him after surgery (at least right after) isn't too hard!
What samples did you order?
I don't have any suggestions for the hospital unfortunately, since I'm not scheduled yet and it's been so long since my first surgery I don't remember what I brought...except myself, I was definitely there!

Hi and Congratulations!
I'm only 3 1/2 week post op. I feel better already then I have felt in years!
Here's some things that worked for me:
The "shrink your liver" diet is the worst part. I used Core Power 26 pre surgery. The chocolate and Banana are the best.
Post surgery I use Unjury. The vanilla and chocolate are the best with skim milk. Don't stock up on anything! Your tastes change.
At liquid phase I particularly enjoyed Progresso Tomato Basil Soup. Some doctors say Tomato Soup is too acidy. My surgeon said it was fine. Low fat cream soups are ok. Sugar free jello and pudding and greek yogurt (no fruit chunks in the beginning) goes down nice.
Later a pot of lean (meat well drained) chili freezes great in tiny containers. A small food processor is a must for grinding up food.
Good Luck with it all!
I love the progresso tomato basil soup (had some last night) - so I hope my doctor OKs it! How's the aftertaste on Core Power 26? Unjury is the only one I've found that doesn't have a bit of funky aftertaste. Muscle Milk (the silver one, I forget the specific name) tasted awful to me. Premier Protein is good and EAS Advantedge is also tolerable.
Good tip on the food processor, I need to pick one up.....I've got a blender, and I remember in the pureed food phase with my band I used it to puree lentil soup and it definitely wasn't a favorite!

Core Power 26 is good. Only liked chocolate and banana. No aftertaste to me. Plus they are pre mixed. Remember to try brands again. Your taste may be different.
I'm allowed to have one decaf coffee now. Used to have 2 cups a day. Don't like the taste anymore. May change.
Another item that has worked well for me:

I definitely like the progresso version better than the campbells, both for consistency and taste! EASAdvantedge is great for a snack too :)

Welcome! I'm scheduled for RNY on November 28th! I'm a lot like you with the wondering if I will be able to keep up with my busy kids, but hey, eventually, I'll have just as much energy as them.
I have a few samples that the surgeon's office sent home with me, and I've ordered Isopure unflavored to mix with my clear liquids for the first week. I purchased some low sodium broth (beef, chicken, veggie) and SF jello for a little added variety for that first week. I also purchased one small container of vanilla protein powder for my week two, and will see how that goes before I purchase more for week three. I did stock up on some vitamins, as well.
Being nervous is understandable. I'm a little nervous, but I'm more anxious than anything. I've been doing the protein forward eating and eating smaller amounts to prepare myself for this journey.
As for what to take to the hospital, I've read a lot about this. Most people say to take a book or something like that to pass time when you're not walking. I plan on taking a book, cell phone, charger, change of comfy clothes to ride home in, hair stuff, makeup, and lip balm. I have a robe that I can wrap around me for when I'm walking so the whole hospital doesn't have to see my rear end! I did order some liquid tylenol for post-op at home.
Good luck to you on your journey!
