diuretics after surgery
does anyone have experience with taking diuretics after surgery? I have horrible water retention issues and have taken diuretics for several years. after surgery, my surgeon discontinued them, saying they could be revisited with my pcp if needed in the future. in the month since surgery, the edema has been much better but this last week, I knew I was retaining fluid again and suddenly stopped losing weight. I took a Torsemide yesterday and peed what felt like gallons. low and behold, I lost 8 pounds since yesterday .... 8 pounds of pee! i was tgrilled to drop the 8 pounds and i feel so much better than i did yesterday but am concerned about dehydration and electrolytes after loosibg so much so quickly. would love to hear from others who struggle with this issue. I have appoint with pcp on friday so will address it with her as well. thanks!!!

You really need to talk to your doctors before you take any more. Your liver and kidneys are working overtime right now trying to process the fat you're burning. You don't want to stress them any more than necessary. It's one of the reasons alcohol can be really harmful as well.
Check with your docs before resuming any prescription meds.

One of my meds for my blood pressure was a diuretic and my doc stopped it shortly after surgery. She didn't want to contribute to any risk of dehydration and my BP was improving. Now that I think about it, that could be why my weight loss slowed! This is definitely a question to talk to your MDs about - diuretics can be dangerous in terms of electrolyte imbalances. Good luck!

What Grim Said... your body is working overtime.
I stopped diuretics right after surgery, and potassium... which I only needed because of the diuretics.
Potassium and magnesium are important, talk to Doc and maybe add them to your supplementation.
When I feel I need potassium I drink one of those small cans of Low Sodium v-8 juice- I doctor it up like a virgin Bloody Mary...Wheeee! hahahaha. It has more potassium than regular V-8 and is 35 calories for the can. I also started using the Morton lite salt again- as it is 1/2 real salt and 1/2 potassium Chloride. I was noticing when I did My Fitness Pal the amount of potassium I was getting in was so low compared to normal... and as someone who has struggled with this in the past I don't want to take chances.
That is my experience, but you need to talk to your Doc. Sometimes the higher amounts of fluids we are pushing (although you are early out) can dilute the electrolytes in our system.

Ditto for me... I was on a diuretic pre-surgery and my surgeon had me stop permanently because he said it is hard enough to stay hydrated after rny.
