After Surgery
My doctor wants me to stay within 60 minutes from his hospital for the first 2 weeks after surgery. I live about 1.5 hours away. Can anyone share experiences with or thoughts about this? I REALLY don't want to stay with my brother who is about 20 minutes from the hospital. How did hotels work for any of you?
I live 4 hours away from the hospital which I am having surgery at, I was only told I had to stay local for 48 hrs after discharged and that is all I have booked my hotel for, I hope it isn't any longer then that. I would think an hour and a half isn't too far to travel too if you had to return for any reason.
two weeks seems a little extreme, especially since you aren't that much outside the 100 mile radius, but definitely would plan to stay at least a week. I live abut 3 hours from the surgery center I was at and I had a follow up appointment 8 days after surgery so we stayed in a residence type Inn for 9 days. it was 5 minutes from the hospital and offered free on-demand shuttle service to the hospital, clinics, local grocery stores and restaurants. the hospital rate was $109 per night, before tax. good thing we were nearby and stayed in town as I had to go to the ER and was re-admitted two days after my initial discharge. we stayed at Home2 Suites by Hilton. it was a huge suite with a full kitchen, plenty of room for my mother and daughter and me, when i wasnt in the hospital. we each had our own bef and space. do check with your hospital. they should be able to provide you with a list of local hotels that give a hospital discount. every little bit helps!!! best of luck!!!

I have a hospital in my town. It's just not a big teaching hospital like UCDavis. I can go to my hospital for IV. They want me to go to the hospital that did the surgery since they know what they did. I think I'll ask my hospital about their knowledge of Gastric Bypass. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I will also check hotels near the hospital. It was almost enough for me to not have surgery when they told me I had to stay close and my brother was the only choice!! LOL. He's great but I just don't know about staying with him...:)
Hope you're feeling better now Gretchen! What happened that caused your readmission (if you don't mind my asking)? So scary! Our surgeries were on the same day so it's always good to hear how you are doing - surgisisters! Hope you're home and doing well now.

This is the first time I've heard such a requirement. There are always regularly scheduled followup visits, but not staying close the whole time.
Many people go to Mexico for surgery, and leave after a few days, and do just fine.

I agree - I was 2 nights at the hospital, then went home (1.5-2 hours away depending on traffic).

Thanks. I am certainly going to talk to my doctor. It helps knowing others thoughts and experiences and i can tell him that.
