What's on your Menu today (Wednesday) RNYers?
Daisy,
I love the suggestions and the questioning when I post. The only menu guidance I got for the full liquids was to get in 50-70 grams of protein and at least 40 oz fluids (to gradually go up to 64 oz/day). We can count our protein shakes as fluid. There has been no calorie restriction, no mention of carbs or fats other than essentially NO SUGAR. Protein shakes are to be less than 200 cal, less than 8 grams sugar, and at least 15 grams of protein but no specification of size of the shake. Pre op we had to drink 5 shakes/day with those same guidelines.
I just signed up for MFP tonight and it says my calorie intake was 650 for today. Since my NUT didn't give me any calorie restriction, I guess that's ok. She was happy with my choices, timing of my intake over the course of the day, and that I was getting in protein and fluids. What guidelines/restrictions do you have for calories, carbs, and fats? Has it been the same when you were on full liquids to the diet you are on now?
Yes, the 14 oz shake is the same for bkfst and dinner. I drink it over 30 min-an hour.
The fudgesicle is Wegmans SF fudge bar and it has 80 calories and 3 grams protein.
Buttermilk has 110 calories/8 oz with 1 gm protein/oz. So a 2 oz shot would be 27.5 cal.
SF Jello is 10 cal/individual cup.
The Bariatric Nurse Coordinator for our program had RNY 7 years ago and has maintained a weight loss of over 100 lbs, looks great. It's nice to know she's been there, done that.
Thanks for asking the questions. It helps me learn!

Hey Terri, sorry you didn't get more instructions from your Centre. So glad you are here and asking questions/getting feedback.
So your 50-70 grams of protein I think is good and as for 40 oz of fluids, that is low in my opinion. Its very very easy to get dehydrated early out. I think you should be aiming for a minimum of 64oz closer to 80oz of fluids, again because its so easy to get dehydrated early out and yes I agree your protein shakes count towards your liquids. Actually anything liquids counts towards liquids so protein shake, soup, decaf coffee or tea, flavored water.
Your buttermilk has no protein for 2oz, just calories, get rid of it off your menu. Your fudgesicle is pretty high calories for just 3 grams of protein, not a great menu choice. A lot of people will say 1 gram of protein for every 10 calories. So if your fudgesicle was 30 calories for 3 grams of protein then great but its not.
As for guidelines/restrictions and what my Centre wanted me at for calories/protein & carbs (and always under 10 grams of sugar) is at two weeks out it was around 400 calories, no more than 1/4 cup of liquids over 30 minutes (you are drinking two cups, which seems really high to me). Minimum of 75 grams of protein and minimum of 64oz of liquids and keep carbs as low as possible like 10 or under. I think at two weeks out 650 calories is way way to high.
I am glad you have a Nurse who actually had RNY at your Centre I think that's amazing, that is so rare to see! Hopefully she gives you great advice as you progress. If you are happy with what your program has given you don't change it but I have to ask if you are eating 650 calories at 2 weeks out of surgery on all liquids how many calories are you going to be at 3-6 months out when you are eating solids?
I am 3 years post RNY surgery. I eat between 800-900 calories a day (you are not far from me at 650 at 2 weeks out), I get anywhere from 95-120 protein grams and I keep my carbs under 40, sometimes I go up to 50 by try to keep it 40 or under. I don't count fat as most of what I eat is dense protein and very little fat.
Good luck Terri its a lot to learn at first and lots of trial and error I wish you the best!

Thanks for the details Daisy. Easy to get rid of the fudgesicles. I'll miss the buttermilk - it has 1 gm protein/oz so I thought it was a good choice but the milk sugar (12 gm/8 oz) makes the carb count too high. I'll figure out some kind of yogurt concoction that's similar. I appreciate your guideline of 1 gram protein for every 10 calories and limiting the carbs. It is lots to learn but I'm thankful for all the advice and good ideas I get from OH.

Morning Morning Morning!
It's still warm today, but the winds are kicking up, and apparently tonight a front moves in... I'll be looking at 60-70's as highs later this week, and dipping cooler than that as next week comes in. The weather dude even said this is probably the last of the 80's until Spring. I'm not happy about this turn of events...
QOTD: Obviously this hasn't happened to me yet, as I'm still so new out that I'm getting the reward of weight loss to keep my mind off the reality of it all in a year or two. BUT, I am struggling with this idea that "I'm done" losing weight... it's definitely slowed down this month, and while I've not ever had a major stall, and I know I'm doing things right, I keep thinking my body won't let me lose more, and I'll always be overweight (wearing a 12 forever). I can't get my head wrapped around the possibility that I could actually see my goal weight - or less - one day... I really hope I'm wrong! I want to be as successful as those on here that hit their goal, or went below, and have stayed there!
Last night I measured out 4 oz of pizza topping, choosing the one with the most meat (1 bite of crust and that was it)... this morning I was up 1 pound... I guess I held onto the water from all of the salt (I even drank well over 120 oz yesterday trying to wash out things! LOL)...
B: Premier Protein Shake, and 24oz of flavored water with 2 doses of Miralax on the way to work... that will help. I need to go! LOL
L: 2.7 ounces of grilled fajita steak meat
D: Taco meat, cheese, salsa, sour cream, and a bit of lettuce in a bowl
S: Brought 1 serving of beef jerky with me today. I don't know that I'll eat it all.
WHAT ABOUT THOSE CUBBIES???!!!
I lived in Chicago for 4 years... I could hear the crowd of the stadium in my apartment... I can't help but cheer them on tonight!!!!!!!

Best World Series, ever! Happy for both teams but, like you, am partial to the Cubbies. Love seeing news clips of the older folks who are fans of either team. Wish they could both win!

Enjoy your OK warmth while you can LOL
If your weight loss is slowing down at just shy of 6 months then hate to break it to you Pammie you might be entering into maintenance. You read enough here on OH that the Vets will tell you that if the weight slows down or stops this early out then you are eating too many calories or eating off plan too much. I hope its neither but that is what I have seen time and time again from the Vets when people say their weight loss is slowing or stopping this early out. How many calories are you eating these days? I don't see any stats in your post. Having said that I don't think you are done losing, but you might need to tighten things up a bit to kick start the loss again! You got this girl!
I am really enjoying watching this World series, both teams are excellent! Tonight is it, we will be clued to the TV for sure!
I am not perfect about entering daily into MFP, but I do it several times a week, and I feel pretty comfortable. I am always between 650-800 calories. All *****ing aside, I really don't cheat, with the exception of wine... I've drank 1-2 glasses like 4 times since I was cleared for it (3 months out). Other than that, I've had an occasional bite of some starchy side that someone has ordered when we've been out, or 3-4 noodles at home, and that's not daily. If I snack off plan, it's things like jerky, pork rinds, protein bars. I haven't had anything like candy/chocolate/cakes/chips (except for a couple at a Mexican restaurant) or french fries (again, I have had 2-3 if I'm in the car with someone that's eating them, but that's only happened like 2-3 times because typically we eat at home or in a restaurant, I hate fast food!)
I've lost 4lbs since my 5 month mark. I have 2 more weeks to go before my 6 month mark, so if I lose another 4 lbs, then a toal of 8lbs looks pretty average from the stats I've looked at. I just like to worry and whine.
Mostly I am just worried that something will go wrong, and I won't be one of the ones to get to goal... but overall I think I hit my 95% mark of good behavior (and that's the number I picked)
I guess I also forgot to put in today's numbers:
B: 2.7.oz of marinated fajita meat 101 calories/ 12.8 g protein
L: Premier Protein Shake 180 calories/ 30g protein
S: 1 ounce of Ralph's beef jerky 80 calories/ 12 g protein
D: 2.7 ounces of taco meat (turkey)/ 2T cheese/ 1T sour cream/ @T salsa/ fresh grilled jalapeno's 211 calories/ 19g protein
S: Mozzarella cheese stick 70 calories/ 5g protein
So totals are calories 642 calories 78g of protein
***Edited to add that I wanted to say thank you for the thoughts, because you did prompt me to enter everything into MFP to get those totals (LOL), and it made me think about it! I'm just having a stressful week with food temptations and such, so I'm whining more about it. Friends leave on Monday, and hubby and I are both quite ready to send all the leftover junk food they've brought into the house to school with the kids! hahaha***

Pammie I never want you to feel like you need to justify your food to me, I am not the WLS Police. I only know what works for me and what the Vets here preach and that is why I mentioned it and wanted to share that with you.
I totally totally get the fear and anxiety/worry that something will go wrong, most if not all of us thought that as well or for the newbies they are probably thinking it too. If you are happy with your food intake, what you eat, how much you eat, logging into MFP several times a week if this is what is working for you and you are happy don't change.
I will make one comment and this is for you and all the 1 year or less out from surgery newbies. For ME, and I capitalized ME because this is what I did, I never let one thing pass my lips before the one year mark that was not part of the whole Protein Forward, Low Carb eating plan. I was in the camp of "get the weight off as fast as I can and get to goal because the "honeymoon" period does end and it gets hard, like really really really freaking HARD!!!! I didn't "cheat" I didn't have any treats or bites of my husbands toast slathered with jam when I was under a year post op (I mentioned toast & jam cuz he eats it a lot). And it was so hard, so damn hard to resist!!! But do I now, hell yes, but like you I was so worried this surgery would not "work for me" so I stuck to the plan, I worked my butt off and didn't go off plan until I got to goal. Everyone single one of you here on OH has to do what works for you. This is what worked for me. I want to support you in any way, shape or form. Just want to help you get to your "goal." If you prefer me to be quiet just say "butt out Daze" LOL LOL
I am so sorry you are having a stressful week, do come here and vent and whine, that's what we are here for, we got your back.
I will say you are doing awesome, 83 pounds lost in under 6 months is fantastic, keep up the awesome work okay!!
You did fine. I have gotten lazy about posting my calories, and it's good for me to account for them!
I don't think I could ever be 100% (even for a year)... I had to pick a number not quite at total compliance for my own sanity. Hopefully it'll work for me (and in the meantime, I'll just stress over it. Gives me something to do! hahaha!)
And I like you challenging me with questions, because it helps me answer to myself. That's a good thing!
And if you ever see something on my menu (especially something that I regularly eat) that isn't a great choice, I hope you, and others, call me out on it. I certainly know I'd want you to.
Oh, and I updated my 2lb loss here, because I guess I hadn't done that lately either LOLOL...
