I I have soup, do I have to wait 30 minutes for water?

If it is liquid only "no".  If you have veggies, meat etc. then "yes".

What she said.

If it has calories, it's a meal. It can also count toward your fluid intake.

As RNYers, we have no pyloric valve. Picture a funnel. Anything liquid goes right through, so you can drink right away. Solids stop at the base of the funnel. It's what keeps you feeling satiated after eating, and that's a good thing. Liquids push those solids through the funnel, and you will feel hungry again right away. That's a bad thing.

Nice explanation!  I knew the answer but had no clue why.  Did we lose our valve when they diverted our intestine?  That must be it.

Thanks, Grim as always.  You rock.

The valve is still there.  Picture the state of Florida with the valve being at the bottom southeast tip and your pouch being cut out of the top northwest county.  The whole stomach is still there but separated and bypassed and only the pouch is still used.  The surgeon creates an opening called a stoma so food can come out of the pouch.  Then that is attached to the intestine.  Food empties right into the intestine and that is why RNY patient can dump with too much sugar.

For a gastric sleeve they take a narrow strip from the southeast portion of the stomach and remove all of the rest of the stomach.  The portion that they keep contains the pyloric valve and no changes are made to the intestine.

My mind does not see a stomach here, but it does see something that should NEVER be cut.

At this point with being only 4 weeks out if I have soup it holds me very well. Maybe this is just temporary but for now I'm happy that it does cause I love just about any kind of soup!

I asked my NUT about this on my first after surgery appointment because I make chicken soup frequently. My NUT basically told me after the liquid phases that soup wasn't such a good thing for those of us with RNY since the fluid would force the solids straight through. She basically told me I could eat the chicken and carrots out of the soup then drink the broth 45 minutes later if I wanted....

Just another small adjustment for those of us with WLS.

This is what I was also told, and I've read that somewhere too. It makes sense, so I'll probably follow that rule for a long time.
