Feeling frustrated

I love cheese but don't eat it often for 1 reason. If I have a choice between 70-80 calores of cheese or 70-80 of meat, I'm choosing the meat. I'm getting as much bang for the calories as possible....

Hmm, I question the yogurt advice only because you're eating the Oikos yogurt which is great yogurt - I think it's the triple zero kind right? That's pretty great stuff for us. I couldn't eat all that much of it and still can only eat about half of a container sometimes. I would also try to ditch as many carbs as you can if I were you. That's what I believe has made me be able to lose the most. I don't eat any pasta, rice, bread - anything. Obviously there are carbs in most things but I eat like 40-50 grams or less a day even now. Maybe less.

Regardless, congrats on the weight loss so far! I understand feeling unhappy this early out. I felt the same way and didn't feel like I was getting anywhere until around 4-5 months. I also was feeling very discouraged by my surgeon until recently too. I was super upset with their feedback. I was a reasonably slow loser...but it's 19 months since surgery and I have to say that slow and steady wins the damn race! I'm still slowly losing. I recently went around 2 months ago to my surgeon and they were seriously shocked at how much I had lost at that point and I wanted to be like SUCK IT lol.

You can do this. Track what you're eating. Come here with your issues. Listen to the advice.

Hi, I am sorry you do not feel well, but your weight loss is already amazing. Every body is different and loses at different pace.

I actually do not know how to say this, since it might not be popular with the other answers you got so far.

Shortly after surgery I tried to stay at around 800 cal a day. When I met my NUT she was very concerned with the low calorie intake and asked me to eat around 1000 cal a day. Of course I did not follow her advise...... A few weeks later I stalled and talked to my personal trainer, who is also a NUT. She, as well thought that 800 cal. is too low and asked me to increase to at least 1000. So, two professionals gave me the same advice without talking to each other.

I increased my calories to 1000 a day. I can eat more variety of foods which makes me way happier and I got the gym 1 times per week and I am loosing around 1 kg per week!

For me, this all makes sense and I have the feeling that I can sustain this healthy life style way longer ....

Long story short, does your doctor who was not happy with you weight loss know, that you are only eating 500 cal. a day? I would talk to him and your NUT.

Good luck!

This is a hard game to play.  I had my 6-week post-op checkup yesterday.  I have been advanced to a regular diet and my dietician was concerned for my very limited carb diet.  She said it is my choice, they do advise to limit starches greatly, but she said if I keep my carbs as low as I am (20-50 grams/day) I will not have much energy.  She suggests upping total calories from 600 to 800/day, using proteins, healthy fats, veggies, little fruit, and limiting all other starches.

Most vets on this forum advise otherwise.  Honestly, I am currently unsure of how to proceed.  My weight loss of 17 pounds post-op and 25 pre-op is totally in the range for someone who did not have a lot to lose.  I have lost 7% of my body weight since they first saw me last December.  She said most patients eventually lose 30-50% of their total body weight.  So, long story short she thinks I am completely on track.

I was glad that she said it is my choice how to proceed.  I think I will probably play around with some options.  One thing I do know is that liquids is a key.  I upped my liquids and lost two pounds yesterday after a stall of more than a week, maybe two.  If you can't get the water in (I had a period of about a month where I could not stand the taste of water) add some diet cranberry juice or MIO to it.  But get in 8-12 cups a day.

Long game we are playing!

I really need to think about your comment.  Thanks for replying!

I've been tracking my food intake since February.  Pre-surgery I did notice that if I got under 1000 cals a day, I would lose less weight than if I maintained at about 1200 cals a day.  It seemed if I got too low, my metabolism would almost stop.  This is part of the struggle I've had with my hypothyroidism.  Maybe I am having a similar experience now??

The main issue with adding more cals, is that I have a really difficult time eating more than 500 cals with my new tummy.  I read the menu boards and see most people talk about meals and snacks.  I get my three meals in and have no desire to eat more and when I do try to eat more, I feel quite miserable.

Since surgery, I have never had more than 40g/day of carbs.  I have talked to the surgeon about hitting the wall tired mid afternoon.  Her response was that everyone gets tired at the end of the day.  I've never had this kind of tired before!  It is getting better, but most days I am ready to go home at 2:00!  I travel a lot for work (which can mean long days), so some days I can sneak out at 2:00, but not as much as I would like to and doing something with the family in the evening is very difficult.  What is too low for carbs?

A lot of different advice - which I am so appreciative for.  Now I need to figure out what will work best for me.

Just found a GREAT article discussing bariatric patients and protein/carbohydrate consumption.  It looks to be a valid study...

http://bariatrictimes.com/recommended-levels-of-carbohydrate -after-bariatric-surgery/

I have not finished reading yet but got through the main part about carbs which says they recommend an average of 90 grams/day while losing, but they have to be low-glycemic (definitely not bread, rice, pasta, potatoes) and never cake/cookies/candy/sugar.  I am guessing they are talking about low starch vegetables, some fruits like berries, which is totally what the veterans here are doing.

The journey continues...

Low glycemic is definitely key IMO so that part is on target and I checked out this study. Does it say how much the patients needed to lose - as in what they weighed pre-op? I don't think I saw it but I am admittedly NOT science-y. I think carb intake and how many you can potentially consume and continue to lose consistently can be dependent on that. Because I had a crap ton of weight I needed to lose and if I had eaten 90 grams of carbs/day I think it would have hindered me greatly.

I'm not sure where the OP started out - if she's a lightweight, heavyweight, or in between but I think that can definitely be a determination for where she should go from here.

Total agreement.  I do not have the answers.  Just trying to weigh what my surgeon and dietician are advising me.  I am a lightweight, I guess (certainly does not feel like that to me).  My dietician commented yesterday that I was "only" 40 BMI on the day of surgery and that just barely put me into the morbidly obese category.  I am at 37 BMI today. Goal of ?.  So.  I am going to continue my close scrutiny of all things carbohydrate.  I am not having any starches.  Any high glycemic fruits, but may add some berries in at some point.  I am going to try to introduce some veggies, as I can tolerate more food.  My dietician said I might play around with a serving of oatmeal from time to time, or beans.
