When did you start exercising after surgery

What did you start with ? When is too much?

My surgery is the 21st. All set ready to go. Then I get a bill for thousands of dollars saying all the Psychiatric visits are my responsibility.  Provider billed medical insurance they denied. Finally got to bill behavioral health insurance and they denied. I could cry. I am not going to stop having the surgery. But sure wish these bills would disappear.  Any suggestion, words of comfort ?

I see you are just having surgery... you can pretty much walk as much as you can tolerate. Once you have surgery you need to ask your Doc when you can do any more than that.

If you are asking... how did people start exercising...I just walked some, used to set the timer in the kitchen for 30 minutes and dance around -- just move. It wasn't until I was 6 months out and 100lbs down that I started more formal exercise. That winter I did 45 minutes on a rebounder trampoline everyday... summer swimming... and for the last year I have been doing various Beachbody exercise videos- cardio and weight training... I still walk the neighborhood sometimes, swim in the summer...and change it up...

I joined a walking group a week after surgery.  I was at the back of the pack, but it v was a great motivator

Your surgeon should tell you exactly what he or she expects you to do. Mine expected 45 minutes of walking a day immediatley upon release. . By 3 weeks everything but weights and situps. 6 weeksout  sit ups and weights

That sounds like a lot. But I guess you have to do it. To get the results desired.

I broke up the 45 minute walk the 1st week and then i was able to do it. Everything else was really easy for me since I had been working out before surgery. It probably is a case by case basis. I had to have him be very specific with me because I can be a little OCD. In my mind if a little is ok - then a lot is even better. I had to know exactly what I could do without breaking anything. : )  I love to work out ( it is the very few things I do just for me) so maybe that all played into my particular personalized plan from my surgeon. Your plan should be personal for you, also.

I personally waited 12 months and allowed the diet to work initially before tacking on the weight via muscle gain.  However, I've also trained and coached people at 6 weeks out, so it's really a case by case basis.  If you can handle it, you can try resistance training after about 6-8 weeks, just start slow and small and work towards progressing.  Remember, get the MOST out of the LEAST!  No need to go 100mph right off the bat as this tends to lead to injury or risk of negative issues.  I would focus on cardio (walking, biking, swimming) first, then progress to resistance training with a progressive overload!

Best of luck!!!

I walk every day and started immediately after surgery. About 6 months in I started some toning DVD SET but that is all I have ever done. Now I walk a bit over 3 miles every day with my dog at a very brisk pace and that is all. I lost all my excess weight plus some (275 to 118) and have kept it off 31/2 years.

I started walking immediately after surgery.  Swimming and yoga (my two big activities) I waited 3-4 weeks for (the PA at my surgeon's office told me to wait until my scabs fell off before going in the pool - that was at 3-4 weeks out).  Weights I think I had to wait six weeks for.
