Morning Menu Gang,
I decided to start this post off since I am already up and at work and no better time than the present right!
Thanks for all your well wishes my friends as I am still battling this horrible cold. Woke up this morning and felt like I had taken two steps back with my recovery, now I am starting to get annoyed, I want to get back to feeling better, eating better, working out etc, I think I probably have another week or two of feeling crappy before it starts to leave me. Stay Healthy everyone, it's a bad cold going around!
QOTD: So we Canadians just celebrated our Thanksgiving this past Monday and I know the American Thanksgiving is coming up in November. Tell me do you host, or do you get invited somewhere? Have you modified any favourite Thanksgiving dishes to be WLS friendly or do you just avoid all the high carb, high sugar foods and stick to protein forward? I was sick this Thanksgiving so I didn't eat but for me I am an "avoider", I just don't eat all the high carb stuff (stuffing & rolls) and I allow myself a teeny tiny slice of pumpkin or apple pie. I pretty much load up on turkey, some gravy and a veggie and it's so filling all that Turkey. What do you do?
Time since surgery: 2 years and 11 months
B: high protein oatmeal (was feeling comfort food this morning) - made plain oatmeal with a scoop of unflavoured protein powder and Splenda Brown Sugar
L: 3 oz of baked chicken with A1 sauce
S: one babybel cheese
D: 3 oz of baked chicken with A1 sauce and some steamed broccoli
S: one babybel cheese and a Health Smart Protein Hot Chocolate before bed
Totals: 825 calories, 95 protein, 45 carbs, 31 fat
PatchMD vitamin patches are on (multi, Iron, B12, VitD/Clacium)
Liquids - working on it
Exercise - am going to try and take the dogs out for a walk tonight, will see how my energy level is
Have an awesome day my friends and wash those hands!

10+ years post op, living & loving life!
Morning!
glad to hear you're on the mend!
Qotd: we usually go to other people's homes. And we alternate each year between my husbands family and mine. This was my first thanksgiving post op, so I just had a bit of dark meat, gravy and veg. A couple of the apples were cheese based so I had a couple of bites of that as well. I'm an avoider like you.
Today is my 6 week follow up (but I'm 5 weeks post op). It feels like surgery was a lifetime ago! Not 5 weeks! Hoping to be able to get back in the water soon. And the gym in general.
Menu:
B:protein shake
L: egg and finish that braised cabbage off.
D: might try to make turkey meatballs with bean sprout type stir fry. Inspired by eggface.
S: protein shake if needed
calories under 500 protein 60.
hope everyone has a great day!

Sounds like you handled your 1st Thanksgiving really well for 5 weeks post op! Good luck today at your follow up. What centre did you go through? I was through Toronto Western. I have my 3 year follow up coming up on Nov 24th other than getting my 3 yr blood work results I am not looking forward to seeing the team as I don't have much faith in what they have to say (they push carbs a lot!).
Eggface is awesome. I made a ton of her "egg bites" when I was early post op, even my husband loved them!
Thanks! I went through the weight management clinic at the Ottawa hospital. I am curious about what they will have to say carb wise. They seem to focus on low fat moderate protein and whole grain carbs. Which isn't really my plan. I'm not zero carb, but I'm keeping it very low, and any I do have, is from veg and some beans.

Yes that's what my centre says as well, low fat protein and whole grain carbs. May I give you my "two cents" and this I have learned from all the awesome Vets and people here on OH. Ditch the low fat idea. We RNYers need fat in our diet. Butter, olive oil, avocado, nuts, all good healthy fats. Ditch the whole grain carbs idea. We just don't need it. When the time comes and you get up to eating 3-4 oz of a solid protein like chicken or beef you don't have room for carbs, even whole grain ones. I know the NUT at my centre when I went in for my 3 mos follow up was pushing couscous and quinoa and a slice of whole grain bread. I just ignored her. And I agree you are on the right track of getting your carbs from veggies and bean, forget the rest. Keep up the great work!
Morning
Sorry to hear you are still not feeling well.
I always host Thanksgiving. I am 4 weeks post op today, so this will be my first holiday. I make an awesome homemade stuffing, with sausage, onion, celery fresh cranberries and chunks of apple. I might have to take a small taste. You know, to be sure the seasoning is just right. I stuff it in the turkey, and love pulling the crispy pieces off the bird when I'm basting. Lol
Today's food
B. Premier shake
1 oz Canadian bacon
L. Deli turkey and swiss, hopefully close to 2 oz
D. Meatball with meat sauce
Still trying to get all the water and protein in.
Can I ask a question here?
Most of you don't seem to be dumpers. At what point did you test the waters and what did you have?
I'm not interested in doing it now, I still have a j tube and a very sore abdomin. So getting violently I'll definately does not appeal to me. I see alot of yogurts with fruit or flavoring which have alot of sugar in them. I'm over the Fage no flavor yogurts and would like something that come in a smaller cup that taste good.
Thanks for the info

Hi Karen, your homemade stuffing sounds divine! Pre surgery at Thanksgiving and Christmas I would easily make a meal of stuffing, forget the rest, I just LOVE stuffing. Enjoy the crispy pieces, I am sure everyone is looking for those too LOL
Your QOTD: I am 3 years post op. I don't dump. I also didn't "test" it to find out. I was one of those people post op that FEARED of screwing up so I stuck to my plan 100%. I remember a lady I knew that had surgery exactly one month before me she told me she ordered a Venti tea from starbucks and asked for milk to be added, this was when she was about a month post op and Starbucks put in full fat milk and she said she barely made it home to her house before she was throwing up and had diarrhoea really really bad, all within 10 minutes of drinking the tea with milk. Her story scared me so much that my husband already drank lactose free milk as he is lactose intolerant so I immediately switched to that post op. I know I was a year or more post op before I had any kind of treat and I would make sure I was at home when I tried such things to make sure I was "safe". Yogurt is not really my thing. We don't have the Danone Light & Fit Brand up here in Canada and that is pretty much the only one I would eat. I know a lot of people would eat a plain yogurt made with Sweetener and just add in Sugar Free Jam or the Sugar Free Torani Syrups to add in flavour.
Sometimes I think the WLS centres say things to scare pre ops into being compliant. Of all the people I know who have had WLS (RNY) they don't dump.
Sorry you are still dealing with the Jtube and are still sore. Be kind to yourself Karen, you had major surgery and you are only a month post op, soreness is normal. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!
Thank you soooo much for your reply. I'm sl glad you mentioned the whole fat milk. I was considering a cup of coffee soon, and I would have put half and half in it. Dodged a bullet there. So it's not just sugar? I am so afraid of having something at work and dumping there.

Well the thing with sugar is it comes in so many different forms that you have to watch for. Such as berries like Amy (Eriam) said. Its not necessarily a cupcake with a ton of icing.
So my centre gave us "Guidelines" to follow for post op. And it stated that the food should have less than 10 grams of sugar per serving. So that is why tracking in MFP and reading labels is soooo important early post op.
Here is a small sample of what my centre said "could" cause dumping and to avoid these foods or check the sugar content and if over 10 grams of sugar per serving you might want to just say no. Most of the stuff I am listing below does have a "Sugar Free" substitute such as popsicles or jello, this list refers to "real sugar" foods. Make sense.
Not that I think you should try these types of things to see if you dump, but lets be honest here only you will know if you dump. So you either avoid them all or you try one or two and wait and see. Good luck, this is a journey of trial and error and you are asking good questions!
