Question for those who have had great success and kept it off...

I can eat anything as long as I am willing to deal with the consequences. The ice cream and cake would make me feel crappy. Sometimes I will still eat a small piece of cake. Bread of any kind isn't worth it to me, so I avoid it. Hot dogs are okay, but sometimes my stomach gets pissy if they are greasy. Fried food has breading, and I know it is going to make me feel like crap, so I usually avoid it. I did eat a little fried chicken once, with breading, and it came right back; so now I know that's not a great idea.

You might find your tastes change. I am much happier with meat, cheese, and a few non starchy veggies than I would be eating bread and lots of sugar. I was out the other night with friends and ordered the charcuterie tray. It came with bread, which I promptly pushed to side, then happily ate my meat and cheese.

I still cook and eat tasty, interesting food, but I don't have to have it frosted, fried, sugared, and in quantity the way I did before surgery. I always ate as if every meal was the last one I would ever have. Now I have taught myself there will be more food, I'm in no danger of starving, and I don't have to eat huge quantities to enjoy something.

I'm 7+ years out and have food issues - but find it easy to work around.

Fried food makes me vomit - so I avoid it.

Any sugary food more than 9 gm per serving causes reactive hypoglycemia - unless I consume it with a meal containing protein and fat.

Ice cream causes bloating and pain.

I will eat grilled beef hot dogs - but no bun (I'm gluten intolerant and gluten free breads are too dry - and full of carbs.)

I stick to meat/cheese/eggs/fish for protein, then add veggies and fresh fruit.  I still use whey isolate protein powder/or ready to drink daily to meet my protein requirements.  My "pouch" is a small 2-3 ounces - so I get full quickly.

There is no way to predict the future after your bypass surgery.  But even with eating restrictions - I would definitely have RNY again.  It has given me my life back and I enjoy each day.

I have been a normal bmi for 11 years, and I can say I can't eat ice cream, more than three bites of cake make me feel like I wish I was dead, I don't touch hot dogs as they aren't actual food and no to fried food also, the smell of fried food makes me sick let alone putting it in my mouth. I have a very queasy stomach and cannot eat anything with too much fat, greasy, too much sugar, fish, red meat, processed foods.  Success has a price tag, which is seriously limited eating.  My husband bought me a tiny little cupcake size cake for my birthday last week, a few bites of its lemony goodness and I was praying to die.  Seriously you get that sick, and that was only after a few bites on an empty stomach.  Had it been after a protein forward meal the cake would have been easier to tolerate.  I have severe reactive hypoglycemia, so basically sweets and carbs I have to stay away from.  But all of that is just me.  My husband had rny and he can tolerate all sorts of things I can't yet he can't handle pork and sometimes chicken makes him sick, he isn't effected by how things smell like I am.  He drinks coffee which could never pass my lips and red wine, another thing that's smell makes me want to hurl.  I don't drink much as there is too much sugar in alcohol, on rare occasion I have a ****tail and then get sick and then don't have one again for a long time until I forget how bad the last one was.
