Is achy incisions something to worry about?

hello, another question in my ongoing series of :"is this normal"

I am about 3.5 weeks post op, and my incisions started aching today. Not on the surface but deeper inside, it kind of feels like tired muscles if that makes sense.

have any of you experienced this? I searched around, but all I seem to find is about the surface incisions.

thanks!

Yes, that sounds normal.  If you've been busier than usual, lifted something you shouldn't have (too heavy) or just moved the wrong way, that can happen. I had an abnormal movement in my stomach area on Thursday night, spoke to my clinic on Friday and they said to monitor it over the weekend, all was fine within a day.  Keep an eye out for redness, heat from the incisions, any discharge, pus, etc. but remember they cut through layers of skin, fat, muscle and organs, and every layer will heal at different rates. After a previous surgery, I felt like they had left a scalpel inside of me, because the odd time I would get a sharp pain but then it would be gone.

I was just thinking the same thing today.  My incisions seem to hurt more today, but then I realized that the area around them has been kind of numb and is starting to have feeling again.  I also get sharp pains, especially on the left side under my rib.  Asked the surgeon, he said that is where the stapler and most of the tools went, perfectly normal.

Early post-op, I monitored my temperature, watching for fluctuations, in the event an infection was brewing.  It helped put my mind at ease because the left side incision was bothersome.  In addition to inquiring here, a friendly suggestion to call and ask your medical team--it helps them learn what frequently asked questions are and can include them in future literature and/or informational sessions.

I always advise people to make their surgeons aware of any new pain. It certainly can't hurt. As we heal we begin to use our core again and become more active. As people posted in the previous comments you may have lifted to much. I had a particular area that hurt and went in out of concern and it turned out the reason a particular incision hurt more than the others was because the Dr. used it to enter the stomach the most. He also later told me my liver was so fatty they had to use that incision to lift the liver out of the way to complete my RNY. Internally you are very swollen at this point and everybody's down time varies. Make sure you get your walking in and listen to your body. I wish you all the best and am glad your in community with us.
