worried about energy level
Hi. I am scheduled for RNY 10/10/16 and am excited (and scared). One of my biggest motivators to have the surgery is that I want to be a better mom and not be so sluggish. I get worried reading about people actually having LESS energy after surgery! I really don't want to have less energy to give my kids and husband! Is it inevitable? Or if I work to keep vitamins and protein levels good can I overcome it? Please reassure me- the doubts are coming.
I has VBG in 2004 and for the first few months I stayed very tired but I know that was normal and the fact that I weighed 350/360 didn't help any. Don't worry about the tiredness it won't last to long just remember to rest/nap when you can but walk as much as you can also. I am looking into RNY

After any major surgery, the healing process takes time. Some factors that determine how long that time will take can range from your age/size/health to how well surgery went and even how well you follow post-op instructions. In my 50's with a high BMI, my low energy period during the healing process was the first three months. Then, many pounds lighter, my mental explosion of feeling freed from obesity kicked into high gear--so did the energy level. I was sleeping less and doing more. The same is true today. I looked at the calendar for 10/10/16--it says Thanksgiving Day for Canada. It's Thanksgiving Day for you, too. Good Luck.
After ANY major surgery you'll need time to recover. That's why most people are tired for a while.
But once you are healed and lost some weight, you will be able to do far, far, far more than you are now. You will literally be running rings around yourself.
Being perpetually low energy after WLS is NOT a thing.

It took me 6 months to get my energy level back (probably longer than most) but now I have more energy than I have ever had. Our bodies have to heal and figure out how to function with less food. Taking your vitamins and keeping your protein level up is essential.

THANK YOU SO MUCH to all who took the time to reply! I feel better about it already.
Your energy level will be down immediately following surgery, but it will come back better than ever. Mine was much improved at about 6-1/2 weeks. Just take it one day at a time, stay hydrated, take your vitamins, and focus on protein. I only took one week off and worked from home week 2, then left an hour early each day during week 3. I took a short nap when I got home every day for a few weeks, then my energy kept.improving. I only wish I had this surgery years ago. Good luck on your journey.
