I won't be the only one changing my diet
Last week our youngest son - age 11 - had to have an upper endoscopy done. He sometimes has trouble swallowing, and 1 episode let to an ambulance ride to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. While we do have to wait for the biopsy results, the surgeon was fairly certain that he has a condition called eosinophilic esophagitis. It's an inflamation of the esophagus most likely caused by food allergies. We will know more after we see the GI dr. but it seems that he will have to give up wheat and dairy, and possibly eggs and fish. I told him I will definitely give up wheat and dairy with him as those will be the biggest challenges. I'm sure that will help me with my weightloss anyway.

77 lbs lost and counting!
Losing the regain! I got this!
I'm sorry about your son. But I think if he can make those lifelong changes, he'll be healthier for it. And short term, it works for both of you.

We tend to pass our bad habits on to our children. I still feel a tremendous amount of guilt for those bad habits, although my daughter works very hard to get enough exercise and keep her diet fairly healthy. Luckily she is not very overweight, but it has certainly been a struggle for her. Good for you for changing your habits to match your son's.
I took close notice to WLSer suggestions to avoid pushing new habits onto adult family members with resistance being a possible consequence to that push (youngsters may be different). Good News; it paid off because I didn't have to do a thing but concentrate on myself and the trickle-down-effect happened all on it's own. One of the surprising rewards to WLS is having family free-willing to improve their lifestyle, too.
Daisymom, sorry about your son, I'm sure that was terrifying for a child to go through. Once you have your surgery, you will be eating much healthier and so will your children. Don't bring any more bad foods into the house, replace them with healthy snacks like apples etc. This is a great opportunity for you all to lose weight together. As the pounds fall off have them go for walks with you, heck tell them you need their help and hopefully they will always continue with it.
Good luck to you
