Had surgery friday
hey everyone,
i had a sleev done oct 1, 2010 and did really well, I did gain 40 pounds back and I have suffered with terrible heartburn after my sleeve, then I started having gallstone attacks, so my physician suggested I get my gallbladder out, fix my hiatal hernia and convert my sleeve to a RNY. I had the surgery on Friday and am home, no pain at all... No pain meds no complications, but I'm terrified of this dumping thing... Because my surgery was performed for non weightloss reasons, they didnt really give me much info on what to eat, expect and avoid... I'm on clear liquids right nowand have not had any problems so far, could a few of you give me some advice and knowledge. OH has always been such a huge support to me so I'm asking for a bit more suppit. I would love some advice, warnings and suggestions. You don't know how much I appreciate each of you... Thanks so much!
So for me (and I can only speak for me) I have not had any bad episodes. I don't think that many people percentage wise experience dumping. For a long time I thought it was related to bowel issues but its not. Its more blood sugar related. I do have some problems but they are more likely when I am doing very long hikes and/or very strenuous stamina related activities. My body then needs more carbs and I have to be careful about what kind I eat and with what. For me if I am going to eat something carb heavy like an energy bar I have a protein shake first or very close by it. To me its more like a blood sugar drop where I get shaky and the sweats. I get brain foggy first. So as soon as I feel that I eat something. I keep protein shakes near by as they tend to help keep it up. I get into the biggest problems if I have to eat something with sugar to get it back up because it causes a yo-yo effect all day.
SOOO long and short of it for someone who is still very close to surgery is to eat protein first and try new things one at a time to see what effect it has on your new pouch. That's not just for dumping, that's just good practice generally. Eat on plan and you should be fine.

I agree with the protein. I try to get in 70 grams of protein a day.
Your pouch is small now. Once you are on solids again, remember the hardfast rules
1. no liquids 30 minutes before during and after. It should have been standard for VSG as well.
2. Chew your bites thoroughly before swallowing.
3. Small portions (invest in measuring spoons and cups, scales, baby utensils and USE them every meal)
4. Always eat your protein first.
5. Read your labels. ALWAYS
Just a tip * Oikos triple zero yogurt was godsend when first started back to transitioning back to soft foods and full liquid*
Watch your carbs and sugars. if its high dont get it. Listen to your body. its going to be trial and error once you are on solid food . You will know what you can handle. Dont be afraid of your new pouch. Im only barely 8 months out and im getting there. there are alot more people who have have had the surgery even longer than me that are living great with it years out. I am striving to get there as well. I wish you all the best. Im sure you will do great.
