I got my bypass ...
well, things like potatoes, rice (even brown rice) and other starchy foods have a lot of carbs and would fall into the list of things you should avoid early out.
Also, most of the people who have been successful long term will tell you that tracking calories and measuring and weighing your food is essential to losing the weight and keeping it off. It is so easy for us to underestimate what we are eating. Keeping a food log and tracking calories, protein, carbs and (not as important) fat is very much important for long term success.
I don't exactly believe in the calorie philosophy, I don't think it is quite right, and apparently my doctor doesn't either. It is more of a set point type of diet, and I can do that. I can't count calories and if I am eating a good diet it really shouldn't be necessary. My nutritionist showed us a tiny plate with protein, carbs, veggies, and that is about the proportions I am doing. I was watching Matthew Weiner videos on You Tube and he has the set point approach, too. He is a bariatric surgeon who has an interesting diet program and goes into a lot of detail, worth watching. I never had much patience with Weigh****chers and all the carbs they recommend, Atkins used to work better for me back when I was dieting. So although I have had a bit of rice or potatoes with other things, like as part of a casserole, I am not very interested in them. I am just trying to eat healthy and eat the same way I hope I will still be eating in 10 years. IOW, veggies and fruit, with a bit of protein. Way too much protein right now, unfortunately. I am really sick of Unjury shakes and even Isopure clear drinks and can hardly wait to give them the boot, but like I said I don't feel I am quite doing well enough to start eating regular quantities of fish and chicken. And pork or beef are out of the question right now. The very thought makes me queasy!! I trust I will get there. I would really like to try salads and smoothies, and I am going to start that tomorrow.
ooops, sorry the You Tube bariatric surgeon's name is MATTHEW Weiner, not Michael.
Here is one of his videos dealing with calories.

Ireally identified with what he is saying here. When I was restricting calories my weight loss would pretty quickly plateau and I became a food obsessive! Had a hard time thinking about anything but food.
When I had stomach upset early on after surgery i realized that was the extent of dumping for me, and it was caused by fatty foods. I can't eat anything very fatty (i.e. Bacon) or any fried foods. So sugar isn't the only thing that may make you feel yucky. Sugar causes my heart to race, but only if I have a a lot.

That was one theory I was working on, because I am eating fat. I take fish oil and I have sesame oil on my oatmeal, etc, just trying to get in the omega fatty acids, etc. Maybe it is just a matter of healing a bit more. As of yesterday I am theoretically able to start eating meat, but I am NOT ready to try it.
